“Empire” weeks ago blew past “The Big Bang Theory” to emerge as broadcast’s top show, but on Wednesday it nearly bested “The Walking Dead” (which would have made it surpass everything on cable as well)!

The contest is even closer if one splits the two-hour “Empire” finale, which averaged a 6.5, in half. The first hour of the finale hit a 6.1, but the second hour – the true “Empire” finale – hit a 6.9.
That’s no zombie. That’s the hot breath of music titan Lucious Lyon breathing on the back of your neck, Rick Grimes.
Those who can’t stand the idea of no more “Empire” before September may take solace in M. Night Shyamalan’s fascinating sci-fi Fox series “Wayward Pines,” which arrives in May with Terrence Howard starring opposite Matt Dillon and Carla Gugino in a key role as the titular town’s top lawman.
