Mike Flanagan is a voice that the horror scene first became acquainted with after 2011’s ABSENTIA. The dark, creepy, yet highly emotional film gave way to last year’s OCULUS, which told the story of an evil mirror that worked its dark magic in the homes and lives of its various owners through the centuries, causing destruction and tragedy at every turn.
His work is great – not only for grounding the horror within an emotional context, but also for the way he carefully breaks down the barrier between the real and the imagined. His films play with subtlties and leave the characters and the audience wondering just where our world ends and the supernatural begins, and that gives his films a very mysterious, otherworldly quality.
He looks to put this technique to good use in his new film, due out this May. BEFORE I WAKE (previously SOMNIA), tells the story of a little boy with an incredible, and terrifying gift.
“In this intense and heart pounding supernatural thriller, Jessie (Kate Bosworth) and Mark (Thomas Jane) decide to take in a sweet and loving 8-year-old boy, Cody. Unbeknownst to them, Cody is terrified of falling asleep. At first, they assume his previous unstable homes caused his aversion to sleep, but soon discover why: Cody’s dreams manifest in reality as he sleeps. In one moment they experience the incredible wonder of Cody’s imagination, and in the next, the horrific nature of his night terrors. To save their new family, Jessie and Mark embark on a dangerous hunt to uncover the truth behind Cody’s nightmares.”
