Hey Folks, Harry here... There seems to be some, like Draven, that seem to feel SONY's move on the GHOSTBUSTERS franchise, as reported by Mike Fleming Jr at Deadline, is a move to sate a very angry male audience that wants their GHOSTBUSTERS with penises. That's not at all how I see this. If you read the entirety of that DEADLINE piece, you see there's something else going on here. Most of the folks that seemed angry about the direction GHOSTBUSTERS was headed with the Feig film. Sure, there were angry males that were being angry males, but I knew more fans that were upset that Reitman and Akyroyd were being tossed to the side.
Now, I was trying to get to my computer for the past hour and a half, but Yoko was using my PHOTOSHOP for a personal matter and I didn't see what was going on in the Bullpen, but as soon as I got to my computer and saw Draven's headline... It just pissed me right off. I don't see what is happening as being something appease a bunch of dicks. This story, at least if Fleming is to be believed, is about recognizing, FINALLY, the incredible opportunity for a vast series of GHOSTBUSTERS movies, to create a larger universe with them that can include - and should include, anyone and everyone.
Right now, a fellow I first met through AICN while he was serving in the military, has been working on a GHOSTBUSTERS fan film that is all about the concept of there being GHOSTBUSTER Franchises... and his thing does involve both sexes.
Here - this is the key paragraph from the DEADLINE piece that has me genuinely excited about this news:
“We want to expand the Ghostbusters universe in ways that will include different films, TV shows, merchandise, all things that are part of modern filmed entertainment,” Reitman told me. “This is a branded entertainment, a scary supernatural premise mixed with comedy. Paul Feig’s film will be the first version of that, shooting in June to come out in July 2016. He’s got four of the funniest women in the world, and there will be other surprises to come. The second film has a wonderful idea that builds on that. Drew will start writing and the hope is to be ready for the Russo Brothers’ next window next summer to shoot, with the movie coming out the following year. It’s just the beginning of what I hope will be a lot of wonderful movies.”
See... Feig's film is moving forward and Reitman is incredibly enthusiastic about it. Meanwhile, what is this new film that's not going to ERASE what Feig is doing, but building and expanding upon it... to create a larger GHOSTBUSTERS universe that SONY is hoping will be a STAR WARS or MARVEL or STAR TREK scale series of events.
And it seems this has come about through a team-up of Akyroyd and Reitman, who had been pushed to the side, they now have offices and are actively planning something that sounds quite exciting... IF it all pans out.
I mean, the RUSSO BROTHERS... getting them involved would be tremendous. They started out over on COMMUNITY - and after their experience on CAPTAIN AMERICA WINTER SOLDIER & their upcoming film CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR... they could be working on this, unless they decide to double down with Marvel on the INFINITY WARS... But for now - we can dream about what exactly GHOSTBUSTERS is becoming.
Will this expansion of plans change Feig's GHOSTBUSTERS making it have to now include something more expansive? We'll see. All I know is I'm personally happy that Reitman & Akyroyd are now somewhat masterminding things.
I'm hearing that more details could be dropping soon-ish, so we'll keep our eyes and ears open!
