Fox Searchlight has released a new trailer for Thomas Vinterberg's upcoming adaptation of Thomas Hardy's novel, FAR FROM THE MADDING CROWD. Carey Mulligan stars as the headstrong, complicated Bathsheba Everdene, a young woman whose life changes when she comes into an heritence and is subsequently courted by several different men, each of whom have a very different life and relationship to offer her.
Based on the literary classic by Thomas Hardy, FAR FROM THE MADDING CROWD is the story of independent, beautiful and headstrong Bathsheba Everdene (Carey Mulligan), who attracts three very different suitors: Gabriel Oak (Matthias Schoenaerts), a sheep farmer, captivated by her fetching wilfulness; Frank Troy (Tom Sturridge), a handsome and reckless Sergeant; and William Boldwood (Michael Sheen), a prosperous and mature bachelor. This timeless story of Bathsheba’s choices and passions explores the nature of relationships and love – as well as the human ability to overcome hardships through resilience and perseverance.
Bathsheba is a fiercely independent character, and Mulligan, no stranger to complex roles, thanks to performances in films like DRIVE, SHAME and INSIDE LLEWYN DAVIS, seems to be embracing that strength whole-heartedly. Add to that the supporting work of Matthias Schoenaerts, Michael Sheen and Tom Sturridge, and we have a film full of potentially fantastic performances.
