Matthew Vaughn Discusses A Possible KINGSMAN Sequel - Includes A Significant SPOILER For The Current Movie!!

NOTE:

The below article discusses a VERY SPOILERY moment in KINGSMAN:  THE SECRET SERVICE, and its impact in a potential sequel.  You may wish to avoid this piece if you’ve yet to see KINGSMAN and wish to preserve its surprising elements.

=======================

I sure did love KINGSMAN: THE SECRET SERVICE.  As I Tweeted last week, it’s ‘brutal, tense, funny, sweet, smart, and classy in a scrappy sorta way.’

I left the theater hugely desirous for two things:  a soundtrack (the fun score by Henry Jackman and Matthew Margeson is available HERE on La La Land Records - the CD contains most of the memorable movements from the film, and a lovely 6+ minute study for Valentine’s theme), and a sequel.

And, based on recent chatter from KINGSMAN producer/helmer/co-scripter Matthew Vaughn, it’s sounding like some conceptualization on a not-yet-greenlit follow-up is already underway.

Vaughn has already indicated that a subsequent picture would deal more fully the evolution of Eggsy (Taron Egerton) into the ‘modern gentleman spy,’ that Mark Strong’s character ‘will be going on a journey that he never imagined…’, and that we’ll meet some American Kingsman folk next time around.  I hope the film would have some fun exploring and skewering the cultural differences between the British and US spies.

Perhaps most meaningfully, though, is a bit of information pertaining to the disposition of one major KINGSMAN character.

A word of warning:  DO NOT READ PAST THIS POINT IF YOU HAVE NOT SEEN KINGSMAN: THE SECRET SERVICE.

In THIS piece over at USA Today, Vaughn pointedly addresses the disposition of Colin Firth’s character in the first movie.

“A lot of people are very upset that Colin might not be in the sequel but I’m coming up with ideas at the moment. If people buy tickets in America, I’ve got a feeling we’ll figure out a way for having Colin back.”

[EDIT]

“The sequel will be ‘This is the modern-day gentleman spy.’ Because Harry isn’t. Harry even says, ‘There is a reason why we’ve developed weak chins.’ He said that meaning, ‘Look at us, we need to get new blood into this system,’ and that’s what Eggsy is. I joke that we’ve made the prequel to the Eggsy movie.”

Huh.

So, Firth’s ‘Harry Hart’ could return.  What do you think?  Has Kingsman dumped Hart’s memory into an AI of some sort?  Do they have a resurrection juice?  We never saw what happened to Harry's body after he was shown the door, so is there an angle there?  A loophole in the shooting/editing choices of that scene?  The way theat sequence was presented…I found a tad suspicious for some reason.

Hopefully matters will unfold so that a KINGSMAN sequel comes our way in short order, and we can resolve such mysteries, as well as discover a few new ones.    Vaughn has loudly and repeatedly expressed his enthusiasm to return for a sequel, and seems more-than-stoked for what they have up their sleeves for the next installment.

Please make it so…
