Gina Carano to get pumped up as Angel Dust alongside DEADPOOL!

For a movie that bombed as hard as it did, you sure hear HAYWIRE mentioned a lot when it comes to the best onscreen action of the current era. Steven Soderbergh crafted the film around Gina Carano’s talents, so even if she hasn’t been able to replicate the impact of that first leading role (though one shouldn’t discount her physical prowess in films like FURIOUS 6 and IN THE BLOOD), we’ve all been patiently waiting for her to show just what the former MMA fighter can do in something else.

Hopefully, DEADPOOL is that thing.

Carano has signed on to the Tim Miller-directed film, which has Ryan Reynolds reprising the character, albeit with an all-new origin story. Carano will be playing Angel Dust, a character who first popped up in Morlocks, and who is capable of pumping herself up, CRANK-style, for short bursts of concentrated strength and agility. Angel Dust isn’t typically associated with DEADPOOL in the comics, but the superpowered street punk may serve as the female lead in this incarnation.

Also of note: Colossus is also supposed to make an appearance. It’d be interesting if Daniel Cudmore reprises his character from the X-MEN films, considering they’re retconning the events of ORIGINS, but I could see it going either way.

As for Carano, I can’t wait to see her unloading holy amounts of whoop ass during Angel Dust’s moments of adrenaline-fueled acceleration. Even though this is a smaller-budgeted, R-rated comic book flick, it still could serve as her mainstream breakthrough, leading to a slew of Carano-led action flicks closer in exposure/budget to LUCY than IN THE BLOOD.

I’m stoked at the way this flick is coming together. Between this and SUICIDE SQUAD, we have the most hope for the notion of harder-edged mainstream comic book flicks than we have since WATCHMEN underperformed 6 years ago. Which can only be a good thing, right?

What you guys think of Carano as Angel Dust?

DEADPOOL cracks wise and cracks skulls on February 12, 2016.
