Collider recently spoke with J.J. Abrams, who offered several small-but-interesting tidbits about the status of the next STAR WARS and STAR TREK films.
Synopsizing briefly:
** THE FORCE AWAKENS is still being cut: “…we haven’t sat down and watched the movie.”
** “One sequence” was shot natively in IMAX. “It’s not a ton.”
** Regarding Abrams’ involvement with STAR WARS EPISODEs VIII and IX (we already know LOOPER’s Rian Johnson is scripting/helming SW#8)...
“Rian [Johnson] will be working at least on 8. But I’m Exec Producing those films…”
When asked ‘What about STAR TREK 3?” Abrams quickly offered “I don’t know if it’s ‘STAR TREK 3’ really, though…” I.e. it’ll be STAR TREK [subtitle here]
He was questioned about Simon Pegg’s recently announced involvement as a writer on the picture.
“He and I talked quite a bit about story. He had a lot of wonderful ideas, and it sort of felt obvious that he would be a wonderful person to work on the story and help craft the story - so he’s working on it.”
