Sir Ian McKellen took to Twitter and released the very first clip of himself portraying Arthur Conan Doyle's famous detective. And it's a very different version of Holmes from what we have grown used to seeing from other recent adaptations, such as those portrayed by Robert Downey, Jr. and Benedict Cumberbatch. Rather than an impatient, snide bastard lacking all empathy, McKellen's Holmes is a kindly grandfather figure, who has grown to be rather perplexed by the reputation he and his many cases have gained over the years.
Based on the novel A Slight Trick of the Mind by Mitch Cullin, MR. HOLMES tells the story of a retired Sherlock Holmes, living peacefully by the sea and keeping bees, until he is dragged back into one unsolved case from the past.
The film is being directed by Bill Condon (GODS AND MONSTERS, DREAMGIRLS), and though no release date has yet been announced, this first clip gives a nice introduction to the character.
