The trailer for the Tom Hardy/Noomi Rapace/Gary Oldman detective thriller, CHILD 44, has made its way online. Daniel Espinosa’s movie has the trio investigating a series of child murders in mid-century Soviet Russia. The gimmick is that the Russian powers-that-be insist that murders don’t occur under the supposedly idyllic communist regime, so they must go off-the-radar to uncover who is really killing all these poor kids.
I like the U.S.S.R. trappings of this story, and I love the idea of Hardy working alongside his DEAD MAN DOWN (so underrated) and DARK KNIGHT RISES/LAWLESS co-stars, not to mention a wonderfully-accented Vincent Cassel. It’s hard to tell whether this is on par with something like SE7EN from this trailer, but there’s enough to keep me hopeful about this stepping stone between now and the May 15th release date of FURY ROAD.
Remember when Philip Seymour Hoffman was going to be part of this? Wish that happened more than ever now…
CHILD 44 is avenged on April 17th.
