The EDGE OF TOMORROW team of Tom Cruise and Doug Liman to reunite on MENA!

Like many of you out there, I had a great time with EDGE OF TOMORROW (a.k.a. LIVE. DIE. REPEAT.). I thought Tom Cruise was a great sport for looking goofy as a pussy who keeps getting killed onscreen, and that Doug Liman crafted some of the best action scenes of his career.

So when I hear the two are jumping into another project together, I'm already interested before I hear the premise. Thankfully, this one actually does sound pretty cool.

Gary Spinelli (the Dolph Lundgren flick STASH HOUSE) sold MENA to Universal last year for a cool million. It's a true story about a pilot named Barry Seal, a drug-runner who worked alongside both the C.I.A. and the Columbian cartels. Cruise would be playing Seal, and according to that Deadline report, would also utilize his real-life flying skills; not a stretch, considering what he's been willing, time and time again, to do for his movies (seriously, watch that M:I-2 opening again).

Cruise and Liman are still in talks to hop onboard, but if they do, the pair would jump into it later this year, which would probably put the release date sometime in 2016. Like Liman, Christopher McQuarrie has gotten chummy with Cruise, so I wouldn't be surprised if he did a once-over on the script, presuming his work on M:I-5 finishes in time. The subject matter does sound like it would play to all three of their respective talents (I'm a big fan of Liman's last look at the drug world, GO), and could even possibly be the pic that finally nabs Cruise some serious awards attention.
