There’s no title, concept or number of episodes, yet Amazon has ordered a full season of a Prime Instant Video streaming series Woody Allen will write and direct.
There’s no indication of whether or not Allen will act in the series, which is expected to hit Amazon next year.
This will be the first series Allen created. Deadline keeps saying this is Allen’s first TV series, but of course the 79-year-old funnyman wrote series television in the 1950s and 1960s, notably “The Sid Caesar Show” and “General Electric Theater.”
Nor is Allen a stranger to non-series television. In 1994 the prolific filmmaker wrote and directed himself (and Michael J. Fox) in an ABC TV-movie version of his play “Don’t Drink The Water.”
The press release boasts a funny quote from Allen: “I don’t know how I got into this. I have no ideas and I’m not sure where to begin. My guess is that Roy Price will regret this.” (Price is VP of Amazon Studios.
I’m not convinced Allen, a comedy genius who writes his scripts with a tiny manual typewriter, has ever used a computer (or a smartphone or an iPad) or heard of Amazon before he signed this deal. Also, I’m guessing the only thing he watches on television is basketball.
