Rinko Kikuchi Goes Adventuring in the Trailer for KUMIKO, THE TREASURE HUNTER!

Hey guys! Horrorella here..

One of the much talked-about films at last year's Sundance Film Festival was David Zellner's KUMIKO, THE TREASURE HUNTER. The film is based off a strange urban legend that made the rounds in the early 2000's. As the story goes, a Japanese woman misinterpreted the events that unfolded during the Coen Brothers' FARGO, and mistook the story for fact. She traveled to the United States, hoping to recover the bag of ransom money that Steve Buscemi's character buried along a snowy highway in the film.

The story was eventually disproven as myth, but it still provided a moment of inspiration for writers David Zellner and Nathan Zellner. KUMIKO, THE TREASURE HUNTER builds a story out from this premise, following lonely office worker Kumiko (Rinko Kikuchi), on a strange journey.

Kumiko is a frustrated “office lady” whose imagination transcends the confines of her mundane life. Kumiko becomes obsessed with a mysterious, battered VHS tape of a popular film she’s mistaken for a documentary, fixating on a scene where a suitcase of stolen cash is buried in the desolate, frozen landscape of North Dakota. Believing this treasure to be real, she leaves behind Tokyo and her beloved rabbit Bunzo to recover it – and finds herself on a dangerous adventure unlike anything she’s seen in the movies.

The new trailer gives the film a vibe of isolation and lonliness, but also one of surreal wonder, as Kumiko's adventure continues.

The film opens on February 27th. What do you guys think?
