REBOOT OF THE CARIBBEAN!

Back in July, producer Jerry Bruckheimer told Collider that the upcoming fifth installment in the PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN franchise wouldn’t have monsters in it - and numerous eyebrows did raise.  I mean, spectacle and dazzlingly realized creature work were defining characteristics in that franchise, right?

Unless they won’t be anymore…

A notion potentially reinforced by recent comments from Orlando Bloom, (who is also indicating he’s not sure if he’ll appear in Part 5)…

"I’m not entirely sure that [I'll be back] just yet, but there are talks," he said. "Basically they want to reboot the whole franchise, I think, and do something with me and the relationship with my son.”

…says Bloom at IGN.

So - reboot?

I’m betting they’ll go for a more realistic take on Pirate madness (and if you know anything about real pirates, there’s a goldmine waiting to explored in real history of the actual Pirateverse).  This would be in keeping with the style of the two dudes helming the film - Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg,.  They made KON-TIKI, a picture was much more ‘grounded’ than PIRATES fare to date.

Although, none of this means the new film will be completely devoid of paranormal hijinx.  Word has repeatedly surfaced that, at the very least, PIRATES 5 would hinge on witchcraft in some way.  Monsters or no, Bruckheimer and Co. may not be altogether removing the franchise from the otherworldly flirtations which has made it so fun…

At this point, PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: DEAD MEN TELL NO TALES is targeting a July 2017 release.
