A trailer for Spike Lee's latest, DA SWEET BLOOD OF JESUS has been released. The film marks Lee's journey into crowdfunding, as he raised money to complete the feature via Kickstarter earlier this year. Billed as an independent horror romantic comedy, the film is a loose adaptation of the 1973 cult film GANJA & HESS. The story follows Dr. Hess Green (Stephen Tyrone Williams), who finds himself thirsting uncontrollably for human blood after a strange encounter with an ancient artifact.
Watching this trailer, it's a little hard to get a handle on the tone of the film, as it dips heavily into romance, drama and social commentary, but seems to be staying away from full-on horror. Like most Spike Lee films, this one doesn't seem to be shying away from heavy themes and concepts - it's just a little difficult to tell from this trailer just how they will be incorporated into the finished story.

Dr. Hess Green (Stephen Tyrone Williams) becomes cursed by a mysterious ancient Afrian artifact and is overwhelmed with a newfound thirst for blood. He however is not a vampire. Soon after his transformation he enters into a dangerous romance with Ganja Hightower (Zaraah Abrahams) that questions the very nature of love, addiction, sex, and status in our seemingly sophisticated society.
