John August to Write Screenplay for SCARY STORIES TO TELL IN THE DARK Adaptation!

Hey guys! Horrorella here...

Last year, we learned that CBS Films was working on an adaptation of Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, the horror series that was a seminal influence in many of our childhoods (especially mine). The iconic books by Alvin Schwartz jumpstarted an entire generation of horror geeks, giving us all plenty of reasons to triple-check under our beds and in our closets, for fear of what could be hiding in the shadows.

Deadline has announced that the production has hired a new screenwriter. John August (BIG FISH, FRANKENWEENIE) has taken over writing duties formerly held by SAW series writers Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan. The project has reportely changed gears, and sounds like it will be going away from the previous version that saw a group of kids banding together to save their neighborhood as a series of nightmares begin to come to life. Instead, it sounds like August will be going back to the drawing board and developing a new concept for his take on the beloved (and nightmarish) series.

Personally, I would LOVE to seen an anthology series based on the stories and urban legends collected in these books. Segments based off of Harold the scarecrow, the lost spirit haunting the abandoned house, sewer rats mistakenly kept as pets, and spiders laying eggs in a young woman's face would be AWESOME! Even if they were aimed at a younger audience, I would be all over it.

There is no solid indication as to how August will be approaching the screenplay at this point, but that is my vote. What do you guys think? What would you like to see from this film?
