CREED is a ROCKY franchise spin-off which finds Michael B. Jordan as the grandson of the original films’ Apollo Creed - in training under Sylvester Stallone’s Rocky Balboa. ‘
The picture rolls early next year with FRUITVALE STATION’s Ryan Coogler at the helm.
While dropping Stallone into another full-on ROCKY movie would like strain credulity beyond the breaking point at this juncture, returning the character as mentor is a wonderful way to continue the cycle, and a clever ay to connect to the history of mythology of the previous pictures. It’ll be lovely to see Stallone inhabit the role once more - Balboa is probably my most favorite Stallone character, and is so wonderfully nuanced and smartly played.
To the best of my knowledge, there’s no formal release date yet for CREED, but stay tuned…
