AICN COMICS: Frida Gurewitz visits Stan Lee’s Comikaze 2014 and comes back with tons of pics!

Frida Gurewitz here. I attended Stan Lee’s Comikaze for the first time this last weekend at the Los Angeles Convention Center. I’m not super experienced with cons but I can handle myself pretty well at one. They are the comic equivalent of Warped Tour and from being a moody teenager with family in the music industry, I’ve been to my share of those. Comikaze is a relatively small con. It’s no SDCC or Dragon-Con. A fair amount of people showed up though. There were a bunch of awesome cosplayers and kind, funny people.

Along with us, “normal” people, a few celebrities showed up. I caught a glimpse of John Barrowman (DOCTOR WHO) and saw Gwendoline Christie (GAME OF THRONES) walking across the floor. I spluttered out a “Can I get a photo?” which resulted in me getting reprimanded by her security guard. I then said something along the lines of “ you look lovely” and she smiled down at me. And I do mean down. She is majestically tall. Dita Von Teese, the voice actors of the Mane six of MY LITTLE PONY: FRIENDSHIP IS MAGIC, and Jewel Staite a.k.a. Kaylee from FIREFLY were also among some of the celebrities there. Oh and of course Stan Lee was there .It wouldn’t be Comikaze without him.

When it came to panels I didn’t attend too many. Though there were a variety of pretty cool sounding ones. There were panels that catered to practically every fandom, from video games to Doctor Who to Disney. I attended the Disney Fandom, which featured the Internet celebrity and well-known mermaid, Traci Hines as well as other Disney-centric Internet celebrities. The panel was small and inclusive. It covered a variety of topics of being a Disney fan. After the panel the members were willing to converse, take photos, etc with us. All of them were just as enthusiastic as we were.

I also briefly attended a My Little Pony voice actor panel featuring the voice actors of the main six characters of the show as well. I may have had a tiny seizure when Tara Strong, who in the show voices Twilight Sparkle, did her Bubbles (from POWERPUFF GIRLS) voice.

There was even a Geek speed dating panel/mixer. Which, admittedly, I attended. It wasn’t horrible. The intention was there and I even one a free gift bag in get-to-know-each-other bingo. When it comes to free stuff I’m highly competitive.

In my experience this convention was pretty enjoyable. The staff was friendly and there was a variety to look at for booths. The only complication I had with the staff was on my second day when my multi-day pass fell off my outfit. (I was in my DC Bombshells Wonder Woman cosplay.) I had to buy another one-day pass. The multiple staff members I talked to did not seem to be on the same page about lost passes. One told me I could get a reprint of my ticket, another just shrugged and the final person told me I would just have to buy another ticket. My day wasn’t ruined, fortunately. I was able to go back inside the floor and still leave with a smile on my face. I’d highly recommend this convention, for comic-lovers, anime-lovers, cosplayers, families, and geeks in general.

Check out the pics I snapped at the con throughout this article to get more of my experiences at this year's Stan Lee’s Comikaze!
