Doom will be in Josh Trank's Fantastic Four, but not as you know him...

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. You'd think after a few failed attempts at bringing Fantastic Four to the big screen Fox might try to actually try a tactic that Marvel has pulled off pretty well so far: not being embarrassed by the source material.

Maybe they have and I'm jumping the gun, reacting to this particular bit of news a bit unfairly. I certainly like Josh Trank, Jeremy Slater and Simon Kinberg, but have also heard from many folks within Fox's machine that things haven't gotten much better since the departure of Tom Rothman in way of creative interference.

So, I'm skeptical... at least moreso than I'd be if Trank was making this movie pretty much anywhere else.

Today's bit of news on the project comes from Collider who have an interview with Toby Kebbell, a great actor that is playing Doom, but not the one we know. Here's Kebbell in his own words:

KEBBELL: He’s Victor Domashev, not Victor Von Doom in our story. And I’m sure I’ll be sent to jail for telling you that. The Doom in ours—I’m a programmer. Very anti-social programmer. And on blogging sites I’m “Doom”.

Why does Fox love to have programmers/hackers as bad guys in their franchises?!? Didn't they learn anything from Die Hard 4?!?

I get it. Victor Von Doom is a silly name. Know what else is silly? A dude with a red skull for a face and a bad guy that wears a big golden horn helmet. That hasn't stopped Marvel Studios from embracing the comic origins and making them fit into a recognizable real world.

Snark aside, I'm a pretty optimistic guy, so here's hoping that Trank is able to pull off a great superhero movie within the Fox system. It's not unheard of. Singer and Vaughn have done pretty well in the X-universe. I'd kill for a great Fantastic Four movie, so hopefully the uneasy feeling I get when I hear tidbits like the one from Kebbell above is only the result of seeing an incomplete picture.

What do you guys think?
