The Director Of NEED FOR SPEED Races Towards A $120 Million Sci Fi Epic…

Scott Waugh, who brought us the NEED FOR SPEED movie earlier this year, seems to be closing in on his next project.  It’s a $120 million Science Fiction episode called INVERSION.

INVERSION...

follows a young Chinese scientist and a street-smart American expat in a race against the clock across the globe to save Earth from an apocalyptic threat — a reversal of gravity causing civilizations to uproot and plummet into the sky.

…per THIS piece in Variety.

At face value, the synopsis sounds loopy as hell and immediately recalls imagery from the World Engine sequences in MAN OF STEEL.

However, I’m betting there’s more to this than the synopsis suggests - INVERSION is scripted by Bragi Schut and David Arata.  Between the pair, they wrote the screenplays for BROKEDOWN PALACE, CHILDREN OF MEN, SPY GAME, and…well…Nic Cage’s SEASON OF THE WITCH movie.

A brief press release continues...

INVERSION will be produced by Academy Award® nominee Michael Nozik (SYRIANA, THE MOTORCYCLE DIARIES), Markus Barmettler (CONVICTION) and Philip Lee (CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON, CLOUD ATLAS).

So, there may be something at least interesting afoot here…

I can’t speak to Scott Waugh’s abilities as a director, as I never saw NEED FOR SPEED. But before everyone throws around the picture’s rancid 22% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, it should be noted that the movie generated over $200 million from box office alone, off of a $60-something million budget.  So he must’ve done something right…
