A few weeks ago, Producer Edward S. Pressman indicated a  belief that his long-simmering reboot of THE CROW would go before cameras this Spring.

In a very interesting interview with Korsgaard’s Commentary, CROW creator James O’Barr expanded upon what kind of film Pressman & Co. are looking to make - and at long last cleared up to what extent he himself is involved with it (we’d previously heard he was connected with and working on the picture, but what he was doing on the production was a big question mark).

Here are some very promising, highly intriguing snippets from the interview.

Regarding O’Barr’s initial meeting with helmer F. Javier Gutiérrez, O’Barr reveals that Gutiérrez told him…

‘I don’t want to remake that film, that film is perfect as it is. I want to do your book, literally page-for-page adaptation.’

[EDIT]

O’Barr went on to discuss his early interactions The Powers That Be…

I said if you want me involved, this is what I need, I want control of the soundtrack, like with the first one, I want a voice on all the casting, and I want to be able to give my two cents on the script and the characters, and they agreed to everything.

[EDIT]

Korsgaard: So they’re giving you a great deal of creative control over the film?

O’Barr: Very much so.

[EDIT]

Per O’Barr…

Lastly, we’re not remaking the movie, we’re readapting the book. My metaphor is that there is a Bela Lugosi Dracula and there’s a Francis Ford Coppola Dracula, they use the same material, but you still got two entirely different films. This one’s going to be closer to Taxi Driver or a John Woo film, and I think there’s room for both of them – part of the appeal of the Crow comics after all is that they can tell very different stories after all.

CLICK HERE to jump over to the whole interview.  It’s quite compelling, hugely insightful, and the Korean War project O’Barr discusses sounds amazingly fascinating as well.  Can’t wait to get a look at that one, and hope we get to soon.

As for THE CROW reboot - this is very promising information which has me much more interested in what they’re up to than I have been to date.  As I’ve said before, based on his DRACULA UNTOLD performance alone, I can totally imagine Luke Evans in the Eric role (O’Barr says Evans looks “great” in make-up), and I’m loving the sound of their approach to this fresh adaptation.

Now, if only they can port all of these smart decisions and good intentions to the screen…
