Glen here…

This week carries us into Dark Water, the second-to-the-last Season/Series 8 episode, and the first chapter in S8’s two-part Season/Series finale.

I can’t help but think the “hell”ish looking sequences featured in this installment’s trailer…

…may suggest that this finale will somehow connect us to the Tennant-era adventure The Fires of Pompeii, in which current Doctor Peter Capaldi famously appeared.  Earlier this Season/Series, current WHOrunner Steven Moffat indicated that the show would address Capaldi’s (now suspicious and) prominent appearance in Fires, per a notion initially advanced by Eccleston/Tennant-era WHOmaster Russell T. Davies.  Has that time come at last?

DOCTOR WHO: 'Dark Water' Radio Times poster

Dark Water, along with next week’s episode Death in Heaven (a title I love) are both scripted by Moffat, and both are helmed by American director Rachel Talalay (who brought us feature films like FREDDY’S DEAD: THE FINAL NIGHTMARE and TANK GIRL, but also holds an extensive television resume including ALLY McBEAL,  SUPERNATURAL, HAVEN, and CONTINUUM).

My guesses on Missy’s identity?

As evidenced by the trailer above, these stories will bring the Doctor into direct encounter/confrontation with Missy (Michelle Gomez), whose appearance has been conservatively teased throughout the Season/Series.  Her ultimate encounter with the Doctor could easily be extrapolated based on logic alone, but a number of early photos from this Season/Series’ shoot - and subsequent official promo images - confirmed the eventuality.

Many folks are suggesting Rani - a theory which might well might work, but seems too easy (unless there’s an new angle to her character).  I’m thinking more obliquely.

Ken Plume and I hatched several theories, including “Missy” being Susan’s mother, or perhaps even the Doctor’s actual “wife” or baby momma - or whatever.  This, of course, moves Sexy into an even stronger metaphorical position.  Given that Missy refers to the Doctor as her ‘boyfriend,’ the later theory would seem to make more sense.

We could be way, way off base here.  We’ll see soon enough…

BEHOLD DELETED SCENES FROM THE FIVEISH DOCTORS REBOOT

Here’s some hitherto unseen material from Peter Davison’s lovely reunion project celebrating the 50th Anniversary of DOCTOR WHO.  If you haven’t seen the whole thing, it’s available HERE at BBC.  Also, it was was recently issued as part of this 50th Anniversary Collector’s Edition in the UK, and will soon find US issuance in the upcoming Matt Smith Years home video boxed set.

LOOK UPON TRAGICALLY ROTTEN PROMO IMAGES OF MATT SMITH IN TERMINATOR GENISYS

This week brought forth a bevy of promo images from next Summer’s high-profile TERMINATOR installment, a few of which included former Doctor Matt Smith in what could shape up to be his most mainstream appearance in a Geektastic production.

Removing all dodgy plot descriptions from the equation, the promo images released for TG were easily among the most clumsily executed/ill-conceived publicity shots I’ve ever seen for a big-budget undertaking ($180 million + budget) - hopefully these don’t accurately reflect the quality of the picture itself, which releases next Summer.

As I’ve previously stated, I’m a huge believer in Matt Smith’s acting capabilities and potential, so I do truly hope TERMINATOR GENISYS recovers from its decidedly rocky promo launch, and boosts Smith’s career as fully as he deserves.
