Not too long ago, I was lucky enough…and I do consider myself lucky in this regard…to enjoy a screening of 2001 from a gorgeous 70mm print. The film remains a staggering, humbling, wondrous cinematic experience which will likely never be paralleled. It is imperfect to be sure, but on an experiential and textural level, I’ve yet to come across any other title which is quite as transcendent as this one. If you ever have a chance to see it on the big screen - particularly via a high quality film presentation - I can’t recommend it enough.
As such, I thought y’all might enjoy this newly commissioned trailer for the picture, promoting the film’s screening as part of BFI’s Sci Fi: Days of Wonder series.
My understanding is 2001 won’t actually be presented on film during Days of Wonder (the sheer number of screenings might make the mechanics doing so unduly complicated under these circumstances I should think). However, those British bastards are going to be looking upon a new, Warner Bros. backed digital restoration of the movie. One would assume said restoration might ultimately make it to US screens (if only through the art house circuit), but…given how these things work…I wouldn’t bank on it.
