Gore Verbinski and Steve Carrel team up for an as yet untitled 'paranoid thriller!'

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. This is interesting. I think Gore Verbinski's one of the best shooters we have working in American film right now. Regardless of what you think of the Pirates films you can't deny that they are absolutely gorgeous and when Pirates 4 happened without Verbinski his unique sense of humor and skill at framing and executing action was sorely missed.

I missed The Lone Ranger theatrically, in no large part to the horrendous word of mouth, but when I finally gave it a spin on Blu I actually kinda loved it. Again, it's a gorgeous movie and Depp's loving ode to Buster Keaton won me over. It's sloppy and big and extravagant, but I had a much better time with it than I expected to.

Since that one fizzled I was wondering what Verbinski is up to and it seems like his next project will be filming in March of next year and will be a paranoid thriller written by Steve Conrad with Steve Carell in the lead. Deadline broke the news and while there's not much more info than that out there on the project right now it seems like a good move to me.

Carell has proven he can play non-comedic characters in his indie work (Little Miss Sunshine and The Way Way Back jump to mind and he's got Foxcatcher coming up soon as well) and if he goes the Robin Williams route and makes some dark little movies then we all win.

As for Verbinski, I think doing something a little smaller and more focused is a great way to remind everybody why he's considered one of the best directors out there.

And that reminds me, I will always, always lament that his Bioshock movie never happened. If anybody has any info on that one please feel free to email me. I'm insanely curious about this movie that never happened.
