RUMOR DEBUNKED: Rumors surface about the state of GREMLINS 3
UPDATE: Hey folks, Harry here... Like I said below, this was a RUMOR and was unconfirmed. I was contacted by Brian Lynch today, and he told me that while he would LOVE to do a GREMLINS 3, he's very busy on the projects that I mentioned in my intro. Here's what he had to say...
"But the GREMLINS 3 rumor is false. Very false. The product of a warped
mind. NIGHTCRAWLERS, on the other hand, is coming along swimmingly. If you
liked GOONIES or GHOSTBUSTERS or BIG BAD MOMMA 2, this is the movie for you.
It'll have the folks over at MONSTERS, INC. shaking in their pussy CGI
boots." --- Brian Lynch
I had heard some good stuff about this NIGHTCRAWLERS script... and it has been on the radar for a while... but it seems that the ol GREMLINS fans have fertile creative minds... especially over on the View Askew boards (where apparently this rumor originally surfaced) So... Let it be known throughout the land that Bryan Lynch would love to do it, but it ain't happening. And that is confirmed.
The Old Story...............................
Hey folks, Harry here... If the below is true... and at the moment I am unable to get it confirmed... I can say that this Brian Lynch fella has been quite busy for a while now. He has 6 different projects in development (scripts and possible directing duties on each)... these involve everything from Wile Coyote's battle against ACME inventions corporation... to a Fraternity House/Last Stand/Zombie flick.... to the next Muppet Movie... His only previous work was BIG HELIUM DOG which I've seen and... while being extremely low budget... it was quite a bit of fun. However... I am profoundly saddened and dismayed by the alleged uninvolvement of Joe Dante in this endeavor... Both he and Chris Columbus should be consulted. In my mind. Here's the rumor... think of it as that till later...
Hey Harry, love your site.
I work at Warner Brothers (I'm just a fly on the wall, a monkey in the wrench here) and I
overheard some of the suits discussing plans to revive the Gremlins
franchise with a third installment. Apparently, they're talking with Brian
Lynch (who sold his spec script "The Next Muppet Movie" to Henson) to write
a script and possibly even direct. From what I understand, the execs were
very pleased with the work Mr. Lynch did on Nightcrawlers (HARRY NOTE: It is about a goonie/explorers type group of children defending other children against the Boogie Man and his Shadow henchman who are attempting to take control of the world.), his script the WB
recently picked up. Also, it seems that Mr. Lynch is an enormous Gremlins
fan so this will be a dream job for him.
Sad news is that Joe Dante will not be involved with Gremlins 3 in any
capacity.
I can assure you that Gremlins 3
is definitly on the drawing boards over here at the WB. We can only hope
that Brian Lynch will do the first two classic entries in the series
justice.
John McClane keeping it safe tonight

no Dante........no Gremlins, it's THAT simple !
-
Hey and while they're at it i say grab Judge Rheinhold and Hulk Hogan...i'm sure they are not busy.
-
Probably not a great idea for another sequel, but you need to see what the script is like before completely putting it down.
The first Gremlins was a masterpiece. The whole sequence in the bar was absolutely hilarious. And I don't think I've ever laughed harder than when the old girl takes off in a stair lift.
The second one, well, the best parts that I remember are then accent of the talking Gremlin "We just want to be civilised" rather like Loyd Grossman (of British TV), and Gizmo dressed up as Rambo(and looking more convinving that Stallone).
Still prob not a good idea though. -
...Cuz after "Reeuuuuminating aaaaand cooogitating, he'll give you a teeeerrible revieeew. Whoooo would waaannt to liiiive with a creeeature loooike this?, Biiilly, It's ooover to yeeeeou...

Zach Galligan is doing much of anything. And as much as I liked Gremlins (which was one of my first sneak preview films I had ever seen), I don't think another installment would do anything in this marketplace. But studios never learn. Sequels this late in the game (if it ain't Star Wars) just don't pack the same punch anymore. I guess WB is looking at the numbers for all the Lethal Weapons, of which each one made more money than it's predecessor. If anything, Joe Dante already made a sequel to Gremlins... it was called Small Soldiers.

is this boogie man some kind of a disco monster? applaud the kids for defending other kids against that kind of an evil being

I was reading a post above, where they mentioned Hulk Hogan. Now, I remember seeing Hogan in the cinema version, but when the film was released on video here in the UK, as well as the satellite and tv versions, Hogan's scene has been cut out and replaced with John Wayne. The explanation given at the time was that Warners felt that nobody in the UK knew who Hogan was, and that we limeys would identify better with The Duke. Boy, you can stop any conversation dead in its tracks with trivia like that !
-
First one great,Second one not crap but not as godd as the first All these 80's films are getting a 3rd sequal what with Crocidle Dundee 3...............
-
Every interview ever done relating to Gremlins has the interviewee raving about how great, how funny the Terry Jones script for Gremlins II was, and that it was only abandoned for budget reasons. GET A CLUE! CGI that sucker, and get it on the big screen! We don't need anything new -- a perfectly good script has been sitting there, waiting for this franchise to get moving again. Go with it!
-
Oh man...Gremlins 1 and 2 are the Best movies ever made, along with 'burbs!! It would be soooooo cool if Joe Dante would make this.. but if he doesnt... I still hope they get Dick Miller, Jackie Joseph, Robert Picardo, Bruce Dern, Henry Gibson..and maybe even Corey Feldman & other Dante regulars to make a cameo at least. Mmm...I doesnt anyone know what Joe Dante is doing at the moment?
-
Hey, I always said that Chris Columbus was only good at writing scripts, hire him!

When I read Lynch's THE NEXT MUPPET MOVIE last year, I was really psyched as an avid Muppet fan and a regular moviegoer. He wrote that script as a writing sample channeling his Muppet fandom into a fresh, original story that rivals (in my opinion) the first 2 movies. On top of that, I've heard/read he's writing another Muppet script that's even better than his first. If this GREMLINS news is indeed true, fans can rest assure Lynch will most likely provide a story very original, funny as hell and worthy of the other two. And, of course, it's GREMLINS. GREMLINS. Just have fun with it.
-
One thing is for sure, Brian Lynch is the most consistently funny guy I know. Every time I read his writing I know I'm in for a lot of fun.
If you've got to have faith in anyone you couldn't pick a better guy.
Regards.

I don't want this movie and I'm sure a lot of others don't either.
-
Does this mean we get to see a film about frat boys raising the dead to piss off the dean? I hope not, cuz that's my friends film. He's making it, and this Lynch will get his-named if he tries to rip it off! Though I am excited for a Gremlins film. heh heh

That's it. hee hee hee

HOW CAN THIS GUY SAY THAT THE FIRST TWO MOVIES WERE "CLASSIC"?
by timmer33
To make a better film than Gremlins 2, here are a few hints for the filmakers of part 3: a better script, better actors, better directing and better editing are needed. And if you follow these ingredients, you'll probably still make crap. Aww, shucks. I'll probably still see it no matter what. Sucks to be me.

hmmm . . . when you think about it, not such a great idea.
by photon_wordsmith
Gremlins - masterpiece. Well, if any 80's movie could be considered a masterpiece because there were some SHOCKERS. Then came the sequel craze. I, for one, loved Gremlins II. There was just so much about that movie that was cool in my mind. John Glover as Donald Trump ripoff Daniel Clamp ("Are those elm trees?" "We'll call it Clamp Corner.") Glover may be one of the great ham actors of his (or any other) generation, but, by God, he was funny in this movie.
Robert Picardo. What can I say? Again, one of the funniest characters he's ever played (and I include The Cowboy from Innerspace - hands up who remembers that one? - in the list.)
But, like so many other things, the time of the Gremlins is past. Sure, maybe we'd all like to see Gizmo again, but it truly is like all those projects that were determined to see sequels that never managed to materialise... Indy IV. I do not expect that to be appearing any time soon. Total Recall II - I absolutely refuse to recognise Total Recall 2020 as any kind of sequel.
There was also talk for years of another ET or a Goonies II, neither of which appeared and, if they did now, they wouldn't be any good.
So, in short, the Gremlins 3 idea should be exposed to bright light in no short order and this idea, fun as it may seem, should be put to rest. It's been too long.
-
How cool would that be? I loved the two gremlins films, another might not be to bad if done properly...
-
...(or at least the reason I hated it) was that it wasn't a sequel. It was a PARODY. I mean, you have to laugh at yourself, but it's like Joe Dante didn't want to come up with a REAL continuation of the story; like he didn't want to do a sequel and decided to thumb his nose at his bosses. The mix of horror and humor is what made the first one great; the second was all humor, usually at the expense of the first movie. What really bugged me was that Phoebe Cates line about "something traumatic happened to me on President's Day when I was a child..." Gimme a break. I didn't know about the Terry Jones version; bring it on!
-
Can someone tell me what it was about?
-
What the-?!
-
Pirahna, Howling, Small Soldiers, 'burbs, Innerspace, Matinee, Explorers. These films have proven without a doubt that Joe Dante is one of the best filmmakers of our time. They Are funny and have a style all thier own. Dante is easily my favorite director. The man has NEVER made a bad movie!! Gremlins and Gremlins 2: The New Batch are easily his two best movies. "New Batch" is one of those rare comedy sequels that is superior to the original in every way. I Very very much would LOVE to see a third Gremlins but NOT without Joe Dante involved in at least SOME capasity, preferable in the director's chair. I say MAKE THIS MOVIE!!! Don't let anything Stop this film from getting made, Warner Brothers! Just do it right, WITH JOE DANTE!!!
-
I first ran across this in an old issue of Starlog when Gremlins 2 came out. I think it was in an interview with Joe Dante (altho I could be wrong. Hey, it's been more than 10 years, so gimme a break). He raved about it. Said it was the funniest thing Jones had ever written -- brilliant. But it would've cost somewhere in the area of $150 million to film, and this was before Terminator 2 and its $100 mil price tag. Unfortunately, I don't remember many specifics of what was discussed, except that some general ideas and concepts were incorporated into the movie that actually got made -- although G2 was completely different from the Jones version. The interview went on to talk about the script's strong dose of satire, and the film's big finale had a giant, 200-foot Gizmo and a 200-foot Gremlin battling atop the Empire State Building with fighter planes and helicopters swarming around ala King Kong. Oh, it would've been GLORIOUS! I remember hearing at one point there were rumors of a novelization of the script, but nothing ever came of that (obviously). Anyone got Terry Jones' email? Wanna check this out with the man himself?
-
No just kidding. For all of you who have not seen Matinee, I highly suggest you go and do that right now! It is one of the best films out there. Also who remembers when Dante was set to direct The Sixth Day?
-
he is willing to jokingly call competition pussies. Thats pretty cool in the kiss ass hollywood world. So how about some news on the REAL project Harry. Glad I didn't run around proclaiming this as a fact. Atleast we wont have another Blues Brothers 2000 to dealw ith in Gremlins 3. I could see it G3 plastered on everything in sight! Lets get some NEW concepts and news on them! Where are the Nightcrawlers scoops?
