Hey guys! Horrorella here...
IFC has released the first trailer for CAMP X-RAY, which totally sounds like it should be a kids' flick in the vein of THE GOONIES, but is actually much darker. Set in the Guantanamo Bay detention camp, the film focuses on a young private (Kristen Stewart), who builds a complicated relationship with one of the detainees (Payman Maadi).
It looks to be an interesting role for Stewart, who seems to be working to take on more challenging characters now that the TWILIGHT films have wrapped up. Her performance here was well-received when the film played at Sundance, though the trailer doesn't really highlight much of it. It does set up some potentially interesting scenes between her and Maadi, as she begins to grow closer to the detainee and to question her understanding of the camp and its mission.
The film opens on October 17th.
A young woman joins the military to be part of something bigger than herself and her small town roots. But she ends up as a new guard at Guantanamo Bay instead, where her mission is far from black and white. Surrounded by hostile jihadists and aggressive squadmates, she strikes up an unusual friendship with one of the detainees. A story of two people, on opposite sides of a war, struggling to find their way through the ethical quagmire of Guantanamo Bay. And in the process, they form an unlikely bond that changes them both.
