"I would never order an alcoholic beverage on the bridge..." Trailer for SPACE STATION 76 has its heart firmly in place and its tongue firmly in cheek!

Actor Jack Plotnick (the interviewer from GODS AND MONSTERS, Xandir on DRAWN TOGETHER, and star of the past three Quentin Dupieux films) has made his directorial debut with SPACE STATION 76, which we now have a trailer for.

As you can see, it is a tongue-in-cheek take on the pre-STAR WARS sci-fi films and TV of the 1970s, like SPACE 1999, SILENT RUNNING, BUCK ROGERS, and the like. You have Patrick Wilson as the drinking, smoking captain, Matt Bomer as a mechanic, the underrused Marisa Coughlan doing yoga, Jerry O'Connell as a horndog, Liv Tyler as a pistol-packing co-pilot, and (unseen here) Dave Bowman himself, Keir Dullea.

While tonally-specific films like this can sometimes struggle to keep the energy going for the length of a picture (like the recent THEY CAME TOGETHER), this looks like it hits that sweet spot between creating its own world and homaging the films that inspired it. The set design, costumes, and jaunty tone are all spot on, and the winking seems to be restrained enough that it won't grow tiresome too quickly.

If nothing else, I'll definitely be seeing this just to get more time with Wilson as the Ron Burgundy-esque captain. He looks like he's having an utter blast.

SPACE STATION 76 doesn't have a release date yet, but expect it to get a limited rollout (possibly VOD exclusive) before the end of the year.
