A trailer has been released for Sundance favorite THE ONE I LOVE, and it looks promising. And mysterious.
The film centers on a couple (Mark Duplass and Elisabeth Moss) trying to work out some marital problems through couples counseling. Their therapist (Ted Danson) suggests a getaway at a secluded house to spend some quality time together and try to work through their issues.
The single-location, small cast relationship film is nothing new to the scene - that premise has been seen many times over the years, and while it has had some success, what makes this film any different?
I'm not sure, exactly, except that the trailer hints at something...other. It doesn't really give away a lot of details, but it does look like this isn't going to be your standard relationship story. Written by Justin Lader and directed by Charlie McDowell, the film is being compared to the early collaborations of Spike Jonze and Charlie Kaufman, which tells me we can only expect the unexpected.
The trailer certainly does a lot of teasing, but it gets you hooked in just the right way. I'm looking forward to seeing what is in store on this one when it opens next month (August 1st for VOD, August 22nd in theatrs).
