Though there are several films based on the life of drug lord Pablo Escobar in the works, PARADISE LOST, from Andrea Di Stefano, seems to be dealing with the historic figure less directly, and doesn’t look like it will be a strong biographical piece.
Instead, PARADISE LOST stars Josh Hucherson as Nick, a young American surfer who falls for Maria, a young Columbian woman (Claudia Traisiac). The budding romance hits a bit of a bump when he discovers that her uncle is none other than Pablo Escobar (Benicio del Toro).
Even though the plot might not be dig terribly deeply into the life of Escobar himself, this set-up offers an interesting opportunity for a unique character study. The clip is only 30 seconds long, but even in that time Del Toro manages to turn in some incredibly potent moments. I'm really looking forward to seeing what he does with this role.
No U.S. release date has been announced yet, but hopefully we'll have one before too long.
