A new trailer has been released for Olivier Assayas' CLOUDS OF SILS MARIA and I have to say - my interest has been piqued.
Juliette Binoche stars as Maria - an aging actress who is asked to return to the play that launched her career. Intially, she had been cast in the role of a young woman who eventually drives her employer to suicide. Now, she is being asked to take on the role of the suicidal woman herself.
It is a poetic turn, to be sure. As the director notes, as she played the young woman, only she can truely understand the older character. But that's not where the poetry ends, as in preparing for this role, Maria is forced to face the starlett (Chloe Grace Moretz) who has replaced her in the younger role, and, in essance, herself.
The film received acclaim when it premiered at Cannes earlier this year, and I am looking forward to seeing how it all plays out.
Unfortunately, we don't have a U.S. release date just yet.
