Papa Vinyard here, now here's a little somethin' for ya...
Now that original series director James Wan has moved on to FAST AND THE FURIOUS land, he's passed the reins of his INSIDIOUS franchise to its creator, writer/actor Leigh Whannell. Whannell hasn't directed anything before, but has both written the previous two films as well as acted in them, as the ghost-hunting Specs. He also conceived the original SAW (you remember him as Cary Elwes' "cellmate" who wasn't laying face-down on the floor), and wrote the first three entries of that franchise, as well as Wan's DEAD SILENCE and the upcoming COOTIES (which he stars in as the socially-maladjusted Doug, and basically steals the movie from under the feet of Elijah Wood and Rainn Wilson).
Whannell has been involved behind the scenes of both of his huge horror series from day one, beyond the duties of your usual screenwriter-for-hire. If Wan has enough faith in his helming abilities to hand him over this massively profitable franchise, I don't doubt that he's a good choice, even if his talents will be stretched out between writing, directing, and acting in this entry (his Specs is confirmed to return). He knows the intricacies of this complicated narrative better than anyone else, so if anyone can convey the craziness going on in these movies to the mall-and-food-court crowds, it's probably him.
He's worked hard to get here. Happy for him. Hope he knocks it out the park.
INSIDIOUS: CHAPTER 3 will put a fright in ya on April 3rd, 2015.
