Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. EW is reporting that X-Men producers are looking into spinning off as many characters as they can with Jennifer Lawrence's Mystique being a priority.
The report quotes Lauren Shuler Donner and Simon Kinberg, but they say nothing definite, just that anything is possible. Donner does dig at the previous Fox administration, saying they did not seeing any value in comic book spin offs, which I like... but in this day and age of blockbuster entertainment the fact that they have one of the hottest A-list actors attached to a comic book character role... well, I can only imagine Fox is seeing nothing but dollar signs at the prospect of a Jennifer Lawrence Mystique movie.
I'm more excited to get more Jennifer Lawrence than I am a film centered on the character of Mystique, to be honest, but the report also mentions other characters considered for their own movies. Gambit is in there as is Deadpool.
Now, if they do a Deadpool movie right I'll be over the moon, but I can not see Fox committing to a vulgar, R-rated comedic superanti-hero who breaks the fourth wall all the time. No way they'd ever do right by that character (as seen by their frankly dumb as hell interpretation of the character in X-Men Origins: Wolverine) let alone give him his own movie.
It's funny to me watching all the other studios running around desperately trying to figure out how to mimic Marvel Films' success. But to give credit where credit is due, if it wasn't for Fox and Sony doing X-Men and Spider-Man we wouldn't have Marvel Films doing the badass work they are doing to date.
Fox was on the right track with The Wolverine and I genuinely loved (most of) First Class. I hear good things about Days of Future Past, so they'll be on a little roll if that one turns out well. I still can't shake the feeling that this talk of spin-offs isn't typical studio milking parading as fan service.
