Moo Cow clarifies the NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS updates
Hey folks, Moo Cow is signing in with yet another fine fine piece of catching us all up with the latest clockwork mechanisms within the Disney Empire... This time concerning the quirky cool world of NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS... Read on and get excited... I am... I love this film...
Harry--
Moo Cow here. Regarding that "Nightmare" piece you have
up on the site today. Actually, the retrofit of "Nightmare Before
Christmas" elements into Disneyland's Haunted Mansion isn't supposed to
happen 'til November 2001. The upside of this is -- should it prove to
be successful with the public -- this retheming will become an annual
occurrence at the Anaheim theme park. Look for Jack & Sally to take up
residence in this holiday rethemed Disneyland favorite from November
2001 through mid-January 2002. ( This being the Mouse, you should also
expect to find tons of new "Nightmare" / holiday Haunted Mansion
material available on the gift cart next to the ride's exit. So remember
to bring your wallet.)
By the way, regarding the special re-release of "Nightmare" this
fall, the place you really want to see this film is the El Capitan in
Hollywood. There, Disney will be putting together a special display of
"Nightmare" artwork and maquettes to be featured in the lobby. Best of
all, for one night only, Henry Selick and several other members of the
film's creative team will be holding a panel discussion prior to the
screening of the film. There, they'll reveal many behind-the-scenes
stories of the making of this stop motion masterpiece.
Think about it. "Nightmare" on the wide screen in that beautifully
restored theater. Plus Selick and crew telling tales about the film's
creation. What's not to like? Don't miss out on this once-in-a-lifetime
opportunity, Big Guy. Call the El Cap (as well as your travel agent )
and get your tickets today.
Also -- don't overlook the significance of Disney heavily hyping its
2001 releases ("Atlantis: The Lost Empire" and "Monster, Inc." ) while
downplaying the December 2000 debut of "The Emperor's New Groove." From
what I hear, "Emperor" is testing okay but Eisner still hates the thing.
He's still so angry about all the money the company blew on the aborted
version of this film that Uncle Mike is verging on irrational when it
comes to this project..
That's why the Mouse is putting most of its marketing might behind
its November 2000's "102 Dalmatians" release while "Groove" is getting
the cinematic equivalent of being buried at sea. Look for a quick
release in December with very little hype, followed by "Groove" hitting
video and DVD in record time. Which is a shame because -- in spite of
its production problems -- there's a lot to like about this funny little
film.
That's it for now, Harry. I promise more, bigger & better stories
shortly. Til then, you take care, okay?
Later,
Moo Cow

I never got to see it on the big screen, I will enjoy it.

Disney still has no balls on this one. They floated a test balloon the other day, and since there was some negativity, now they're saying "No, really, this is great!" Here's the core of my problem with this again:
You DO NOT trot out old product in a half-assed way. "We're gonna release it, but only in 300 or so theaters."
They saw that comment, so now they're playing up the El Capitan exclusively. Oh, and they would love for you to come in particular, Harry.
Again, I assert that the limited release is an act of creative cowardice; NBC mixed a revered icon (Santa) with a hero straight from the (benevolent) netherworld. Disney figures that if they play this on the sly and bury it in theater 29 at the multiplex, then only fans of the movie will attend, without drawing in their normal crowd with the attendant "Mommy, why is Santa Claus in the bag?" questions.
Santa won't be a character in the revamped Haunted House if they go ahead with that plan, and they'll turn Jack and Sally into straight-ahead smiley Halloween characters.
Enough.
Is there anything on Disney's animation slate now that actually sounds like a truly great piece of animation? . . . .

No rethemeing! I don't want to go through the Nightmare Before Christmas House. I wanted to go through the Haunted Mansion. Make a new ride for Nightmare, but don't deprive us of the 999 ghosts and the invite to be number 1000. Disney, stop it!!! You're losing you're heritage. You're throwing away Walt's visions. I hope this doesn't become popular. I am already mourning the loss of a really cool theme such as The Swiss Family Robinson tree house. What next...are they going to replace Mr. Toad's Wild Ride with a ride in that stupid Inspector Gadget car?

alright, i dont live anywhere near america, and may never go to disneyland again but i am very upset about these changes to the haunted mansion. waht is the new disney doing? underrating classic cartoons such as bambi and upplaying the cuteness and kiddie humour is one thing but actually TEARING down an attraction site to promote "this years offering from the Mouse House"?? is quite repulsive. i take comfort in the fact taht it is a limited time thing and everything will be restored until THAT time of year comes along again, so i think my post is mourning the robinsons treehouse and warning disney that i have a watchful eye on whatt they are doing to the home that MY uncle walt built me to dream in (OK, a little strong. but im a bit emotive about this whole thing!). geez, i am having a sucky internet day. my emails all are persimistic and dooming. at least i have the common sense of you guys at AICN and talkback. sometimes i think we are the only sane ones IN the cinema, dontya think? now continue in your damning of this morally-challenging corporation (it is sad in itself that i refer to my once treasured walt disney studios as a 'corporation'). sigh. baff

The Haunted Mansion is one of the greatest attractions ever to come out of the mouse house. The designs by Marc Davis and the sheer cleverness and genuine spookiness of the ride have kept folks coming back time and time again for over thirty years. The NIGHTMARE characters will ruin the entire feel of the place and turn a great, atmospheric ride into a mechanical advertisement. I think the movie could make a great dark ride unto itself, but LEAVE THE HAUNTED MANSION ALONE!!! If you've forgotten how great this ride is, I suggest hopping into your Doom Buggy and creeping on over to http://www.doombuggies.com It's a site "dead"icated to the Mansion and it rocks!!!

...I love The Nightmare Before Christmas and all, but The Haunted Mansion is one of Disney's perfect attractions. Nothing else is necessary. I wonder if Disney is simply adding Jack, Sally, Zero, Lock, Shock, Barrel, etc. to the house, or if they are re-theming the entire ride. I'd hate to see that happen. Nightmare deserves an attraction of its own, and the Haunted Mansion should stay as is.

Um... did any of you doom-sayers actually read the article above? "Should it prove to be successful with the public -- this retheming will become an annual occurrence at the Anaheim theme park. Look for Jack & Sally to take up residence in this holiday rethemed Disneyland favorite from November 2001 through mid-January 2002." It's something they're doing from Halloween through Christmas... then the ride goes back to normal. It's just being redecorated for the holidays. At 'worst', they're talking about doing it every year... but nobody is saying the Haunted House is being "torn down" and replaced with Nightmare (which is a classic in itself, imo... not 'this years offering from the Mouse House'). 9 months of the year, it will be just as Walt intended it. Go then, if it really bothers you so much.

Anyone have any *NEW* news on the special edition DVD that they are planning to spew forth?

This isn't the first time Disney has done bastardizing to their rides. If you had been to DisneyWorld about 10 years ago(speaking of the one in Florida - I don't know if this applies to DisneyLand in CA), and again recently, you should have noticed some changes, specifically with Pirates of the Caribbean. They removed or altered several of the sites in that ride. Most noticably in the town where pirates used to be there chasing women and boozing it up. Many of those are now missing, except for the one where the woman is chasing a pirate with a broom. I was very disappointed to see these changes. What, are they trying to fool people into thinking pirates were responsible people who respected women and actually launched Alcoholics Anonymous or something? Come on! Leave the classics alone! Especially the Masion! That ride is awesome! Now, if they really want to change or remove a ride, do something about the maddeningly annoying "It's a Small World" ride. Now THAT one gives me the creeps...

Actually, I believe that they actually did just tear down the Mr. Toad's Wild Ride. Sorry.

A little addendum on the "El Capitan" in Hollywood. Not only will Nightmare be shown there in it's full glory, and not only will there be a tres cool pavillion filled with models, etc... But Disney is actually inviting people to come dressed up as their favorite Nightmare character for the Halloween night showing. It should be a blast for anyone in the area.

I was hanging out in the Disney Gallery store on Michigan avenue in Chicago inquiring about WDCC club nightmare figures when the manager of the store informed me that Disney had a special meeting of Disney store employees discussing what type of merchnadise might be coming down the pipe, the manager mentioned there would be a lot of stuff and mentioned dishes. A weird thing has happened here and with the mishandling of the film upon its first release it has taken on a life of its own, evidenced by the insane Japanese toy market. As someone who loves the movie and collects the merchandise, I really hope Disney does not screw this up a second time. Hey if a Disney marketing guy is reading this PLEASE make a mayors hearse as a toy :) Also someone below mentioned retrofitting Mr Toads wild ride, actually that ride was scrapped at Disney world and is now a Winnie the pooh ride, to quote Steve Jobs "pooh is Huge", and finally I also collect Haunted Mansion items and worship Marc Davis however the ride could use a change after 30 years, just dont mess with the cemetary :)

I suppose your favorite movie is
My Father the Hero then? Or perhaps Bogus. Get a life. -
thanx for pointing out that website, geexapoppin! I wasted most of my morning with it. I grew up in Fla, went to Disneyworld all the time, love the Haunted mansion, recently went to Disneyland for the first time, and...wow! It's relly cool how, on the inside, the two mansions are identical, down to the last detail! I hadn't been in a long time, so I was realy amazed at just how great those effects were. I figured out how they did the birthday ballroom scene, and when I read the article on that sight, I found that I was RIGHT! Anyway, changing the mansion at Christmastime every year, I guess I can live with that, I just don't trust Disney all that much. I would be heartbroken if they changed it permanently.
-
You all keep talking about how Disney mishandled the film first time out. As I recall it was advertised and marketed pretty heavily. Whu??
-
I'm gonna be mad! They should be really nifty animatronics. And... umm... yeah. I don't really mind if they tear down the whole damned park, because it's all just a really shiny way to rip money outta yer wallet as violently and quickly as possible. Gotta get funding for the sequel to that amazing piece of art "101 Dalmations", ya know! Sally is awful cute, for a tiny model. I have nothing else to say, except that I really like pigs 'n blankets. Mmm! This has been a Moment w/User ID Indeed! Sorry, ALL Thumbs, I loves ya like a sister, but I'm just cursed with the ability to see through corporations. Soon I'll be seeing through reeeaaalllityyyy! Woooooooo!

Last year, for about 4 days or so they screened Nightmare Before X-mas. The even had the animation director and the voice of jack there for a special pannel discussion. I guess this means Disney and the El Capitan are planning on making this a yearly event. Please say it's so, cause last year was so much fun. I can't wait to go back again this year.
-
then I'll wait for another night at the El Capitan. This is not Henry Selick's movie anyway, might as well call Return of the Jedi Richard Marquand's movie.
