Jon M. Chu's bringing JEM AND THE HOLOGRAMS back for a live-action movie! He's lookin' for talent to fill out the cast!

Papa Vinyard here, now here's a little somethin' for ya...

The above announcement video was found at JemTheMovie.com (via Coming Soon), and it basically lays out the plan by Jon M. Chu (G.I. JOE RETALIATION, STEP UP 2 and 3), Blumhouse Productions founder Jason Blum (THE PURGE, PARANORMAL ACTIVITY), and music impresario Scooter Braun to bring JEM AND THE HOLOGRAMS to the big screen. They also make a request for audition tapes via Tumblr and the official site (#JemTheMovie), so everybody out there with talent and a passion for the original series can throw their hat (and dancing shoes) into the ring.

For those unfamiliar with the original series, JEM AND THE HOLOGRAMS (also known as simply JEM) was co-produced by Habsro and Marvel, and ran from '85-'88. It's about a woman named Jerrica Benton who uses holograms to project the image of her alter-ego, the pink-haired rock star known as Jem. Her and her band, The Holograms, deal with rival groups, the record industry, and the challenges of protecting Jem's secret identity (and the tech that masks it).

I'm not sure if the property has endured the way TRANSFORMERS and G.I. JOE had prior to the release of their big-budget movies, but there's no doubt that Chu, Blum, and Braun seem totally enthusiastic about getting this flick on the silver screen. How they plan to translate that oh-so-specific '80s vibe, from the music to the clothes to the girls' attitudes, is going to be the big question as this project goes forward. Hopefully, it will make a bigger splash with audiences than the underrated JOSIE AND THE PUSSYCATS flick did over 10 years ago.

How do fans of JEM feel about the director of STEP UP 2 THE STREETS and G.I. JOE 2 reviving this almost 30-year-old franchise?
