The Frontrunner to helm T3'

Published at:  Aug 12, 2000 5:16:06 PM CDT

Wheeeewwww.... Alrighty folks... Harry here. Maaaaaannnnn, if the 'frontrunner' is Christian Duguay... and if Arnold is desperately pursuing him to direct T3... and Duguay is like brushing the film off as not being worth HIS time (this is the guy that did the JOAN OF ARC tv thing and THE ART OF WAR)... well... Boy I'm excited... woo hoo... That script has got to be some sort of work of genius to not get... not only an A-list director... but guys without a strong film under their belt to PASS or be DISINTERESTED in it. UGH... Arnie... just... don't make the film. Hold off... wait for Milius and King COnan.... wait for Russell and Darabont for DOC SAVAGE... Attach someone to WITH WINGS AS EAGLES, defer your salary to the backend and get it made. Don't make a movie to just go through the motions... This feels like one of those... "my last several movies haven't done that well so I'll just go back to the nest and shit out the same ol egg." Move along...

It looks like the front runner for the director of T3 is Montreal
filmmaker Christian Duguay, best known for his work on TV's "Joan of Arc"
and the upcoming Wesley Snipes vehicle, "Art of War".

This news comes from a local Montreal newspaper which sat down with the
43 year old director for a little Q and A last week. Apparently, this is the
guy Shwarzenegger wants, and with Cameron out of the picture, Shwarzenegger
seems to be the one calling the shots. The two were supposed to work
together a few years ago on "Pathfinder", a big-budget Paramount thriller
that was set to be made in the filmmaker's home city. That project fell
through but Shwarzenegger hasn`t let go the idea of working with Duguay.
However, Duguay isn`t quite taken by the idea of "Terminator 3", claiming
that he won't commit to anything until he sees the finished script. On top
of that, it has been reported that he is looking at 14 other offers,
including a comedy starring Antonio Banderas and a 50 million dollar MGM
prison break film called "The Extractors".

This may sound like sour news to us film geeks who would love to see
someone like Ridley Scott take over the series, but it looks as though we
might have to settle for Christian Duguay. If anything, this news has made
me a lot more curious about "Art of War".

    by darth voice

Somebody please tell Arnold that he should only be focusing on three films at this point in his career - King Conan and Crusade, and he desperately needs to hype The Sixth Day, which, to me, looks like it might turn out really well, but it will probably end up sucking.

Ok, so we have Arnie, Edward Furlong and now looks like we have a director, please let this turn out ok!
Anyone know as possible plot yet?
And does anyone have info on Linda Hamilton joining up with the cast? Hope so, but I can see them killing her of as a kind of cliffhanger on to number 4? Anyone else think so?

    Most would probably agree....the
    project should be shelved. It
has the same reek of desperation
    that the "Basic Instinct" sequel
    has hovering around it.
King Conan would be way cooler,
but what is up with Arnie and

be playing Doc, or one of the

Duguay also made Screamers (okay) & The Assignment (rocks)...

    by wesley snipes

Christian Duguay made The Assignment, which was a spy-thriller about the capture of Carlos the Jackal and way way better than it had any right to be. Based on that flick alone I would give him the chance to see what he does with T3. Based on the rest of his films, I'd say he can make cheaper films look expensive and has a nice eye for visuals without degenerating into the rapid-cut music vid crap. Speaking of rapid cutting, whatever happened to Stephen Norrington (Blade)? Wasn't he up for this gig at one point? If it has to be a music-vid-style director, I think he'd do the best job with it.. Plus, he already has ties with Lightstorm & James Cameron...

It will be on video quicker then you can say "Jingle All The Way".

    With Wings as Eagles?

    by paganosis

Hey Harry, I'm not totally sure, but I think the "With Wings as Eagles" film was a scam! There were two con-artists who's names I will omit, were posing as partners in a false movie company. They were going around to various investors (one of them posing as Thomas L. Fisher) and getting money for a movie that may not go into production, and using Arnold's name to get the money. These guys were eventually caught. Arnold did consider the script I guess a couple of years ago, but then turned it down.

    Wesley Snipes is right...

    by jackburton

Man, thats a weird ass subject line, but anyways as I said he's right, The Assignment which Christian Duguay directed a couple of years back was in fact a great action thriller, and just based on his work on that I'm interested in his upcoming film Art Of War (which coincedentally co-stars Michael Biehn), and wouldn't write him out immediately if he got the gig. I mean give the guy a chance, so some of his previous films may not have been much chop, remember everyone's gotta start somewhere, I mean ever James Cameron had his Pihrana 2 now didn't he? ******************************************************************** Personally the director that I'd be after would be Kathryn Bigelow (aka the female James Cameron), she has the skill, style and most of all the hunger to deliver a hell of a film, and her links with Cameron would likely guarantee some unofficial help from the big guy himself. Still like I said, until Biehn and particularly Linda Hamilton are connected to this project I'm not that interested in it anyway. ******************************************************************** This is JackBurton signing off, saying "is it hot in here or is it just me?"

All I have to say is this, I love James cameron films especially the Terminator films. He comes up with the coolest concepts for movies, no one can do it better than the creator himself. If he has no part in it then the project should be left alone until he is ready and comes up with kick ass story and action sequences.

    by bari umenema

Why Hyams? Because he's technically adept at these type of films. The guy's a talented technician who studios turn to when they need a technician only. Not a super-stylist, just a hands-on technician who serves as his own DP and can handle action and effects, it's why Jimbo Cameron suggested to Arnold that Hyams be the Director of "End of Days" after commercial helmer Marcus Nispel flaked out with his silly memo of ridiculous demands. Then again maybe this Dugauy guy will get the gig. That's Showbiz!

No. We really, really don't. Just let it stay dead. The last Terminator movie didn't leave much room for a sequal. Not enough for me to want more. I just don't think there IS room for another movie. I mean, I would hate for the Terminator franchise to be dragged-out and beaten to death with a shit-load of stupid sequals that only embarrass the whole series.

    To Schwarzenegger: From ABking...some advice

    by abking

Hi Arnold, I told the webmaster that runs your site to give you this page link for you to read what the fans think and what Harry Knowles has to say. I must put my two cents forward on the matter. I pray to god you know what you are doing!!! Up until reading the news about Christian Duaguy, I thought you could still talk Cameron into directing T3, but that doesn't seem likely now. Before you commit to any script for T3, PLEASE let Cameron read it so he can give you his opinion. I think Jim needs to be apart of anything related to TERMINATOR (even if only producing). Like Harry Knowles said, attach a top director like John McTiernan to direct WITH WINGS AS EAGLES and get it off the ground once and for all. WWAE has a wonderful script and you should get it made ASAP (could you talk Cameron into producing WWAE for you?). Also do CONAN THE KING because it will add greatness to your career, especially with John Milius directing and the Walchowski brothers producing it. Come on Arnold, don't dissapoint the fans...PLEASE don't dissapoint me, ABking...your number 1 fan.

    by tommy5tone

he's a proficient, B-list director with the ability to occasionally pull off something with a whiff of coolness about it. 'the assignment' (carlos the jackal thriller with top work by aidan quinn) is the kind of movie that you rent from the local videeo store when you can't get the latest bruckheimer, only to find that it's pretty darn involving and intriguing. and 'screamers' actually don't suck too much. but would i put him in charge of 'T3'? no, sir. in fact, i'd start from scratch with this one...reinvent the whole thing and get stephen norrington directing vin diesel and peta wilson in some high-octane, low-budget, foot-to-the-floor flick that's got plenty of hard-hitting VIOLENCE. and don't think i'm some freak - what do you remember about the first 'terminator'? that's right: it was bone-crunchingly violent! not gory or gruesome, but it had plenty of impact! that's what 'T3' needs! so give it to me, damn you!

    --by being so damn greedy.
All his film projects fall away because he charges way too much.

If he wants to revive his career--first thing he needs to do is waive his fee for once--pump it into the effects. Dont do T3(not that I have reverence for T2--it was rather childish and hokey). Do Conan the King. And bid farewell to the physical action pic.
But if you do Conan, dont get Milius! I watched Conan the barbarian the other week and it sucked! It was slow and boring. Where was the action? Where was Howard's Conan? Hell, D'onofrio did a better impression of Conan in the Whole Wide World during that one scene on the Texas hill.

Try getting Bil Dear as director. Who the hell is he? You must be asking. Well, he was the only director to do a good episode of Amazing Stories(Mummy Daddy). and he was in line to direct Conan the destroyer. he had some great ideas--like getting ILM to do this winged monster for Conan to fight at the end.......very "Harryhausenish."
The ultimate sword and sorcery pic is yet to be made.
Note on Aliens: its funny how Cameron "dumbed down" the franchise with his sequel. When I think of A L I E N, I think of an adjective meaning: strangeness, foreign, extraterrestrial etc...but with Aliens--poor literal minded JC turned it into a plural noun!

    unwanted unneeded sequels

    by batvomit

Terminator II was released in 1990 or '91 and it was really just one of your average summer action film blockbuster that Hollywood defecates every year. The Terminator movies weren't bad but they weren't particularly good either. There isn't anything really unique or different about the concept or storyline of the Terminator movies and it just seems like making another would be kicking a dead horse. Bringing back the Terminator yet again would be about as bad as bringing back Ripley in Alien 4. Most of the time (unless you are Godzilla) when a character dies in a movie it is usually a good idea to let them die rather than come back as tired redundant bastardizations of once decent stories.

Eddie Murphy stopped being funny soon after Coming to America was a big hit. His movies sucked at the boxoffice. So....Beverly Hills Cop III came along and sucked 50 times more than any of Murphy's other flicks! This is beginning to sound like Arnie(his last "hit" was Batman and Robin and even that performed below expectations). Then Jingle All the Way, then Arnold made his own Beverly Hills Cop III with End of Days. BHCIII made Beverly Hills Cop II look good and the original look like Citizen Kane. I watched Terminator 2 the other day, and it was like "this movie is the finest piece of modern cinema in the world." YEAH

Now that I'm done exploring the "ENTER" key and all its magic qualities... let me finish my rant. Like I was saying... AMAZING STORIES. Some 15-year old TV show you watch on The Sci-Fi network, you seem to think holds the savior for the Terminator franchise. Why? Because he had this revolutionary idea for Arnold to fight some winged special effect in the last act of the second Conan flick. (The stupid, B-movie Conan flick, I might add.) You're right, dude. Cameron and Milius are unimaginative retards... this Bill Dear guy is the goods. That must be why he's never directed anything worth a steaming pile of crap... he's obviously just waiting for "the right project" to come around. (And Harryhausen... yes, the very mark of technology and ideas that have never seen the light of day in fantasy films.) And, lastly, you say Cameron "dumbed-down" the Alien franchise because the esoteric sub-meaning you got out of the first film's TITLE was skewered by pluralizing it for the second movie? Shit... if I ever needed an example of a person trying to make a point just to seem vaguely intellectual and FAILING MISERABLY, yours is the example I would employ. Yeah, poor ol' ignorant, "literal-minded" Cameron... bitch, please. For one thing, if you're watching a movie, and it's really good, and you're totally involved in the film, and you actually stop and think to yourself, "Wow... this movie so completely expresses the evocative nature of the title"... then you're a fucking moron. Pay attention to the *film* next time, okay? Secondly, even using the title as the crux for a film's merit, what was the main issue in the first film? There was... an ALIEN. It was killing people, and it was really, really scary. That's what the title was all about. In the second film... there were ALIENS. Lots of them. And they killed people, and they were really, really scary. Woah! Wait a second, Jim! Where the FUCK did you come up with a jacked-up title like that?! You dumb bastard! You'll never work in THIS town again! (Unless you go on and make, you know, True Lies, Titanic, another Terminator film, or The Abyss. Hey... there's another one! Boy, it's not like "The Abyss" had any underlying meaning to its title, huh?) So, SomeGuyWithAName, please... do us a favor. Grow a goddamn brain, will you? Until that happens, please, PLEASE refrain from speaking what you think qualifies as "your mind" on this board. I humbly thank you. Lightstormer OUT.

Oh man their now-budding breasts and pert little hot-bods should be able to make that wacky but lovable Terminator Robot Android Arnold even more irritable than in the first movie! "Come back here you little sex-pots and do your god damn homework before I rip your arms off and pull your cute little legs apart like a wishbone at Thanksgiving dinner!! Ooops that reminds me the turkey is burning! Hasta la vista babies!!"

    The Death Of Hollywood

    by thehamstersbitch

Is it me or there a tremendous amout of shit being put out by Hollywood these days? Let's get right to the point: it doesn't matter how good or how much potential this Duguay guy has. The only way T3 will succeed will be for a big-time director to do this film. otherwise, the public won't give 2 shakes of a hamster's tail. My hamster lover thinks a T3 film might work. I think the second film pretty much killed any idea for a sequel. Cameron even cut out an ending showing Sarah and John in the future, feeling the final shot of the road with Sarah's voiceover was the better ending, and I agree. If Arnold chooses this crap over Conan The King, Crusade, and other cool projects he's been associated with, then it really is time for him to retire. Or maybe's he's getting some REALLY bad advice. This is The Hamster's Bitch. Have a nice day.

    T3...

    by pubman

While some film series lend themselves to franchising among different directors, the terminator films are the vision of Cameron, as the Star Wars are Lucas'. Granted, Lucas got others to direct his scripts, but he was deeply involved in the production. If Cameron himself isn't going to commit to the project, then T3 is in the hands of studio execs who can't have the vision the movie needs, and Arnold, whose steaming pile of shit End of Days eroded whatever confidence in him I had after Batman and Robin, another, more brightly lit pile of shit. The two terminators are classics, if they aren't going to be properly followed, then screw it...plenty of good ideas out there. Sorry this is so long, but it's my first post.

IT'S NEVER SHARP ENOUGH! (Licks knife edge)

    by steve_the_hutt

If you don't know what I'm talking about go rent Screamers right now. This creepy sci-fi is the incarnation of the story that inspired the "Terminator" idea in the first place. Go rent it! Now! This guy knows how to creep you out, while making a nice tech film. He knows what he's doing. I am encouraged.
