The first trailer has been released for the upcoming adaptation of Lois Lowry's award-winning novel, The Giver.
The haunting story of THE GIVER centers on Jonas, who lives in a seemingly ideal, if colorless, world of conformity and contentment. Not until he is given his life assignment as the Receiver of Memory does he begin to understand the dark, complex secrets behind his fragile community. The film is based on Lois Lowry’s beloved young adult novel of the same name, which was the winner the 1994 Newbury Medal and has sold over 10 million copies worldwide.
The trailer makes it out to look like a parallel story to DIVERGENT, which opens this Friday. We see a lot of similar themes of government control, the fight against conforming, etc. So you have to wonder exactly what will set THE GIVER apart in the massive craze of YA/distopian adaptations that are currently being flung at the screen.
Time will tell. Hopefully we'll see more distinct flavoring in this one as additional footage and trailers are released in the coming months. Lowry's novel has been well-regarded since its publication back in the 1993, so at least we know that the source material is strong.
