Papa Vinyard here, now here's a little somethin' for ya...
Our latest look at Disney's MALEFICENT is, at just over 2 minutes, our longest peek at the world first-time director Robert Stromberg has created for Angelina Jolie's title character. We see a bunch of new stuff, including shots of Angelina before her wings were clipped (spurring her quest for revenge against Sharlto Copley's king) and the reveal of Sam Riley's character. We also get a few more choice Jolie moments where she uses her striking presence to creepy effect. Love those pearly whites!
Biggest surprise for me: it seems that Copley, not Jolie, is the clear villain of this film. The backstory and imagery imply that Copley wasn't entirely justified in stealing MALEFICENT's wings and grounding her for life, making him a legitimate target for her vengeful wrath (although it's arguable that his innocent daughter suffers just as much at her hands as he does). If MALEFICENT is, in fact, a "good guy," they really weren't kidding when they said that this would be an entirely new spin on the character, and not just a SLEEPING BEAUTY retreat. And that's Kool and the Gang from where I'm sitting.
On top of everything else, the effects look to be coming together quite nicely. I particularly like the green mist surrounding MALEFICENT right out of Disney's original film. Plus, you know, dragons.
MALEFICENT will try and get dem wings back on May 30th.
