Sofia Coppola in Talks to Direct Live-Action Version of THE LITTLE MERMAID!

Hey guys! Horrorella here...

As live-action fairytales are hitting production in a massive way, Deadline revealed that Sofia Coppola is currently in negotiations to helm a new version of The Little Mermaid for Universal.  It's a bit of a suprprising choice for her next project, given the more adult/dramatic nature of her previous body of work, but it could also yield a very interesting film. The script is being written by Caroline Thompson (EDWARD SCISSORHANDS), which has me hoping for something other than the standard version of the story.

The original tale from Hans Christian Anderson is wicked dark, and while it's not a given that the studio is out to make a dark and grim fairytale, I would be excited to see a Coppola-directed version that stuck a bit closer to the source material and strayed a bit from the Disney animated songfest that we all grew up on.

At the very least, it's bound to be pretty.

What do you guys think?
