Word about a NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS rerelease!

Published at:  Aug 11, 2000 8:27:29 AM CDT

Hey folks, word has it that on October 27th of this year.... Disney is going to do a big rerelease of NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS... Why? Well because of it's popularity, because they plan on more merchandise and third... and most importantly as a free promotion for the retrofit of the Haunted House for the holidays with NIGHTMARE BEFORE XMAS themes and visions so that they have that whole corporate synergy thing going. My Reaction? I can't wait to buy the merchandise.... see the movie and fly to DisneyLand and check it out. Hmmm... guess they're evil corporate plan is going to at least get my money. Hmph... Oh.. the rerelease I'm hearing is going to be an under 1000 screen deal... possibly as low as 300.... we'll see. That's it...

This is the greatest re-release news since the Godfather. I will be first in line.

  • Disney has never really given 2 shits about this film, so don't think they're doing anything noble here. But... It was nice to see it in theatres the first time, and it will be nice to see it up there again. And for all you DVD-only folks who never got to experience the joy of laserdiscs... Just wait 'til you see the DVD special edition (taken almost entirely from the laser set). It'll knock yer damn socks off. If you've never seen "Vincent", it's worth the price of the whole set alone.

    Two words: "Chicken" "Run"

    by prankster

In case you haven't noticed, now that there are trends in animation that AREN'T carefully crafted by Disney, Team Rodent does whatever it can to scramble on the bandwagon with materials they have. When other companies started putting up serious competition in the 2D field they countered by rereleasing various titles in their catalogue on the same day to smother them. When Nickelodeon/Paramount hit it off with Rugrats: the Movie, they released the closest thing they had in development, Doug's First Movie (with Recess: the Movie soon to come). When PIXAR and PDI started hitting it big, they scrambled to create their own CGI division with Dinosaur. Now that a stop-motion flick has been a success, they're rereleasing their own movie with similar features. They'll be releasing something similar to "Pokemon" soon, too, watch for it. The sad part is that Disney seems to believe they have a right to every dollar that's made in the realm of animated features.

I wil drive far to see it!

    by film snob

First off if Disney was wanting to compete with Chicken Run they would not wait until October. By that time Disney will have missed all opportunity to hurt it's box office. Nick Park and company have had a great run in theatres with no threat at all from rat house. Now onto the topic. Two years after NBC was released there was a costumed screening of it in LA! That right, people dressed up as there favorite characters and went to the screening. This movie's cult following has been growing in strength. I can see this becoming another Rocky horror with a showing at every Halloween. I am a big fan of this movie. So even though I don,t want to give a dime to a Disney film I'll still drive as far as need be to view this wonderful imaginative film.

    Burton's finest hour...

    by gooner

The first time I saw NBC in a cinema, the place was crawling with little ankle-biters, most of whom were paying bugger all attention to the screen and busing arguing with each other. Let's hope that this re-issue doesn't get aimed at the kiddies 'cos it isn't a kids film. Disney take note !!

Here's how this relates to Star Wars!

    by dwarf sidious

Just kidding. That was bloody hilarious, though.

    Ok.

    1) Dreamworks had nothing to do with Chicken Run, except for marketing and distribution. It was an Aardman product, and it was good. If you're jonesing for W&G, stick around, a movie is next on their slate.

    2) The point about Disney being followers and not leaders is 10,000% right. Ok, 100%. You DO NOT trot out old product in this lame-ass way. I love NBC, and have probably seen the movie 20 times, but just give me the dvd and be done with it. "We're gonna release it, but only in 300 or so theaters." What the hell is that?--"We know you like this movie, but seven years later we're still afraid of letters from the Christian Coalition."?! Remember, when NBC first came out dumb people freeeeeeeked because it mixed a revered icon (Santa) with a hero straight from the (benevolent) netherworld. Disney figures that if they play this on the sly and bury it in theater 29 at the multiplex, then only fans of the movie will attend, without drawing in their normal crowd with the attendant "Mommy, why is Santa Claus in the bag?" questions. I guarantee you that Santa won't be a character in this revamped Haunted House if they go ahead with that plan.

    Ok, I'm done.

My e-mail address has changed, but there's no option to change it! Wah!

To quote Homer the great WOO HOO

    by smapdi

The only highlight of seeing "Hollow Man" last week was seeing the coming attraction for NBC. I had not seen this movie till it was out on video. Of course, after the first viewing I was totally hooked and have watched it many many many times since. However, I am really excited to see this on a big screen. Between this rerelease, the new Highlander flick and The Grinch why does the Fall/Winter season look so much more promising than this summer turned out to be? When a reviewer says that a movie like "The Replacements" is par for the course of this summer, it's a sad day in Hollywood.

Chicken Run, Souless? Bland? Blatant abuse, personal attacks, OF

    by meat takeshi

Man thats harsh, and fairly inaccurate, that movie had more than enough character and was far from bland. Dreamworks pretty much let Aardman get on with it, with only occasional visits from Katz, as they brought into Aardmans style and content not just a brand name in the way the Mouse House would for example swallow up a competitor. Souless and bland movies do not illict the kind of response, especially in the reserved UK, that i witnessed at a screening. Givin it was an Aardman home town showing but... you know where i'm coming from.

    by meat takeshi

A take on the Tortoise and The Hare fable is up next and should be moving into pre production shortly, a script is apparently in place. W&G will likely be about three years off.

    by all thumbs

Did you just say that Disney is refitting the Haunted House ride with characters from "Nightmare"? You didn't say that. That can't be happening. I love "Nightmare Before Christmas" dearly, am very excited for a rerelease or a cool DVD and also would really like to see a "Nightmare" ride at Disneyland. HOWEVER, I would hate to think that the changes made to the Haunted House ride would be permanent. That ride is always my favorite stop next to Big Thunder Railroad and the Pirates (a ride that was changed, unfortunately, for PC standards). You can't have a trip to the Haunted House without the great atmosphere of the original ghosts. Spruce them up, give them a rubdown and a break while the "Nightmare" characters temporarily take over, but don't change them forever! Please say this change is temporary and that my wonderful collection of 999 ghosts will still be there when I take my children in the future. (Don't you just despise this love/viciously hate thing going on with Disney?)

    HM revamp???!!!

    by usagibrian

What can they be thinking? Better to make a movie about the characters in the HM than to muck about with the design. Don't get me wrong, I pull out the tape of NIGHTMARE every Christmas, but it has no business plopping into an American classic. Tarzan's Treehouse I can live with (it was already a lame attraction), but not the beloved spooky house in the back of the park!

The Nightmare Before Christmas is my all time favorite animated movie EVER!! I am so glad that Disney has given this movie the classic treatment of a re-release. As for the merchandise, I can't buy them all, i'll just get what I missed last time (they had the coolest ties (i'm such a nerd)).

Also, as great a film as The Nightmare Before Christmas is, no sequal please (unless you have something really special). Just bring us more wonerful stop motion adventures like Nightmare Before Christmas & James and the Giant Peach.

    Thanks Again Mickey :)

Though it could've done with a bit less Rocky than it had, but no point in arguing with you all, I guess.

It'll be nice to see NBC on the big screen. I still haven't seen the whole thing, which is kinda weird for an animator that loves Burton films. Too bad James and the Giant Peach was so, ummm, weird.

    by narf

Okay... I'm just reading the insert from the laser set... You'll get the film (duh), audio commentary by director Henry Selick and 105 minutes of supplemental including "The Making of...", 3 never-animated storyboard sequences, 4 deleted scenes, optical tests for "Zero" the ghost dog, theatrical teaser and trailer, still gallery covering the entire film from concept, design, production and publicity, several "Slow Bob" MTV shorts by Henry Selick, as well as the 23 minute "Frankenweenie" and 5 minute "Vincent". Cool non?

Because the Haunted Mansion as it is right now is one of the coolest things in the world!!! I'm told that they already retrofitted 20,000 leagues under the sea to have a Little Mermaid theme. This is a little less lame, but come on! Any other Haunted Mansion supporters out there?

Arrghh...I hired the nightmare before christmas and I thought it was terrible. Not terribly good, but terribly bullshit. Arrghh, it was just crap after crap after crap. The animation was done pretty well, but the story and characters and voices made me want to turn it off. Knowing that other people liked it however, I watched until the end, turned it off, and went to bed disappointed. The character's weren't in the least bit likeable either. Tim Burton is very much overrated. Nightmare before Christmas was crap, Sleepy Hollow(as a whole) was crap and Edward Scissorhands was just plain bullshit(although Johnny Depp is good). His signature drab-looking environments is something which has never added to any of his movies. Tim Burton is liked for his movies, but are any of them really that good. I mean 'that's my favourite movie good'. I don't think so. I'm not saying he's really bad, I just don't know why so many people put him up with Ridley Scott, James Cameron, Robery Zemeckis and the likes.
