Nordling here.
There are three times of the year that I live for (since I've never been to Sundance, hopefully one of these days that event will make it four) - Butt-Numb-A-Thon, Fantastic Fest, and South By Southwest. It's work, but man, it's fulfilling work. I love seeing movies with a movie-crazy crowd. I love discovering new artists and new visions - both small and large. I love seeing my friends again. And I love going to Austin.
This year's SXSW looks tremendously exciting. I know that I'm not leaving Austin until I see Richard Linklater's BOYHOOD and Gareth Evans' THE RAID 2. I'm also very excited to see Wes Anderson's new film, THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL, with Mr. Anderson himself in attendance. If I get to shake that man's hand and thank him for RUSHMORE, that'll be something I can knock off my bucket list.
But I also want to see some fresh, smaller films as well. TWO STEP, a Texas noir, seemsvery interesting to me, and I hope to see more films this year by Texas filmmakers. I'm a big fan of the Spierig Brothers, so PREDESTINATION is definitely on the list. The documentary THE IMMORTALISTS looks to be a fascinating study into old age and the two scientists fighting it. BEYOND CLUELESS sounds like the greatest teen movie ever made, a study of the genre narrated by Fairuza Balk. CREEP sounds like an interesting psychological thriller, but with Mark Duplass and Patrick Brice involved, it's going to be one strange trip. THE DANCE OF REALITY is Alejandro Jodorowsky's new film, which alone is cause for fireworks and celebration.
And this year for the first time at SXSW, we get sneak previews of new television shows, including the return of COSMOS, FROM DUSK TILL DAWN as an episodic series, and what seems most fascinating to me, PENNY DREADFUL, a new take on old horror characters like Dorian Gray, Dr. Frankenstein, and Dracula. With John Logan (GLADIATOR, THE AVIATOR) and Juan Antonio Bayona (THE ORPHANAGE, THE IMPOSSIBLE) involved, this is sure to be a hot ticket. And I just might have to see GODZILLA with Gareth Edwards offering a Q&A about his summer blockbuster remake, and the original TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE, which celebrates it's 40th Anniversary this year.
So much good stuff. There's no way I'll be able to cover it all. But Capone, Quint, Harry, and I will do our best! It's going to be a great year. And they haven't even announced the Midnights yet.
