Just got done watching it and am not too impressed. Oh well, we'll see.
-
I prefer the clothing in the movie, and the trailer does make this look pretty cheesy, but it could be really really good. It is the Sci-Fi Channel after all. They must've put some serious Dune fans in control of it. I'll keep my fingers crossed.

a friend of mine in college got hold of a "European Director's Cut" (or something to that effect) and it was like 4 hours long. Execllent movie! I think most people in America have only seen that 90 minute version they show on the Disney channel and I can't blame them for hating it. I didn't read Dune till after I saw the movie (several times) and I have to say that I think Lynch did a great job considering how much action and dialoge is in there. I will probably watch this version just to compare and contrast.

Granted, looks a bit Star Trekky at times. It

Lynch's "DUNE" was on channel 4 here in the uk a while back and
by monty python
...it was at least 2 and a 1\4 hrs long. I can't imagine what a shorter version would be like. Great movie. I couldn't be bothered with the mini-series teaser on a 56k but the stills I've seen suggest previously unfathomable levels of corn. I'll probably catch it on channel 5 (British in-joke-snigger).
-
Looks good, has a very epic feel to it. I'm very excited. No one should be uttering the words "I liked Lynch's better". Lynch is a great filmmaker. But he trashed Dune. If there was a choice between no movie and Lynch's movie, I'd pick no movie every time.
-
I really hope they don't overdo Baron Harkonnen like they did in Lynch's version. That one clip seemed awfully full of bravura, but that passage was supposed to be, so let's hope he's a little toned down through the rest.
Everything else seemed okay. I like the new stillsuits, they look more used, more real. I don't think that the whol trailer was cheesy, just a few bits (Paul shaking at the end looked almost laughable, but we'll have to wait and see).
Now, please, no "weirding" modules, and bring on a decent ornithopter!

Something did while I watched that trailer...
-
I've always loved that...fake look it lends to movies.
-
If I had a choice between Lynch's movie and no movie I'd take a biscuit every time. Lynch's movie isn't exactly Dune but its a great film and it exists and there's no choice left to be made about it. If I had the choice between watching Lynch's movie or some cheesy no budget MOW about Dune......hmmmmm tough choice.

I honestly don't understand much of the hatred attributed to Lynch's Dune...it somehow feels like Stephen King's hatred of The Shining...
And yet, they are both similar adaptations. Both very different from the book...but extremely stylish, with excellent acting, fantastic visuals and great sound.
Did the same people that are preparing to love the TV version of Dune also love Stephen King's 'amazing' TV version of The Shining?
If so, then i am definately not looking forward to this TV version...
Are people simply frustrated with what Lynch's version could've been and wasn't? Or do they just hate it implicitly as a worthless piece of garbage?
Because, let's be honest, as it stands, it has some of the coolest visuals and some great sequences...and as it looks, it easily has better characters in some of the roles... -
To clarify...
Re: Stephen King's hatred of The Shining, I meant Kubrick's verison of The Shining...
and, I was being fecetious when I said that Stephen King's mini series version was 'amazing'...
thanks for your patience -
The one thing that they said while describing Paul and The Duke was the BLACK hair...it is mentioned endlessly in the novel...why a blonde dude? Maybe to distance itself from the '80s flick I suppose...I dunno.
I liked the over the top Baron, but thought the Mentats were a bit weak in that version... Can't wait to see what the SF channel did to one of my favs!
PS when are we gonna see Enders Game???? Sci-Fi should do that one next! -
...you're an idiot. Learn something of whence you speak. Lynch's version was pretty much unwatchable for all but the most devoted fans of Dune because Lynch wanted it that way. That's his shtick. His was the theatrical release, the short version. Later, when it was being prepared for TV broadcast I believe, some studio execs actually did something smart (hard to believe, I know). They said, you know, we spent all this money on this flop, it's unfollowable, and there are all these good extra scenes on the cutting room floor Lynch left out to make it "edgy". Let's put them back in! This is the 4-hour plus version you speak of, and Lynch demanded that his name be taken off of it (it was nearly watchable, after all...). Unfortunately, they didn't have the money to do all the eye effects and such, and the added opening (disliked by some) was done in 4:3. This is supposedly why nobody's ever burned it to DVD. I sure hope that somebody does soon, there was once a $300 laserdisc set with all the versions...
As for the trailer... I don't think I'm going to like the actor playing Paul, the overacting in that last shot (and others) is pretty bad, but I still have great hopes for the miniseries. Hell, even the prequel books written by Herbert's son have been fairly well done so far, so let's hope that this is also a pleasant surprise.
The rumor that Netter Digital was doing some of the effects has me worried, even if they were just doing composites they have proven quite strongly in B5 season 5 and Crusade (not to mention Bats) that they weren't even competent for that. Luckily they seem to have bitten the dust; hopefully their demise will not adversely affect the miniseries (most likely it will help it, unless they took all the money before going under...).
-
You call ME an idiot?!? All I said is that I saw the 4 hour movie, read the book, then agreed that it was a good film. Did you even read my post?!? Just becuase I don't know the whole "back story" to the 4 hour version you pimply faced, sci-fi freak, dickless virgin, doesn't mean you should call me an idiot. Get a life, man!

dip....
I read your original post several times because I couldn't believe the stupidity level.
It starts "I still like the Lynch version....." and continues on the first line "a friend of mine in college got hold of a "European Director's Cut" (or something to that effect) and it was like 4 hours long. Execllent movie!"
You are giving Lynch credit for something he deserves very little credit for. I'm almost in the 'Lynch's version or no version, I'd choose no version' camp, except that I thought the 4 hour version was pretty good, better if you'd read the book.
You then continue "I have to say that I think Lynch did a great job considering how much action and dialoge is in there."
Of course, to say this is just wrong given that he went out of his way to distort the book into an Edgy Lynch Piece of Crap(TM).
Perhaps idiot was the wrong word, but I did respond to your (how to put it... extremely mislead?) original post fairly and accurately.
However, your response shows that maybe idiot was the correct word...

Baron H played by that pathetic effeminate twit from Beetlejuice
by fourmyle
Dune trailer looked cool except that the Baron H seems to be played that pathetic effeminate twit fatboy from Beetlejuice, Demolition Man, et al. OK, the Baron can be decadent with some offbeat personal habits. Hell, the Baron SHOULD be decadent. But he should also exude evil, or cunning, or some damn thing besides giddy nastiness.

If you go over to the STARSHIP MODELER website, they have not one but TWO 'thopters entered in their Scratchbuilt sci-vehicles contest.
-
...a GREAT Lynch movie, but a fairly lame translation of DUNE to the screen. My big gripe with the flick is that Lynch felt compelled to add his own "creative" bits...plus, his version of the Baron was gross (great Lynch character) but completely WRONG for Herbert's character. Guys like Lynch should not be allowed to make films based on existing sources. I love Lynch's work, but he's too weird (take a look at THE ELEPHANT MAN...yikes!) and full of ideas to be true to someone else's story (THANK GOD he passed on RETURN OF THE JEDI for just that reason!!)
-
When B5 came out, I thought that the visual designs for the Centauri civilization looked awfully "Lynch Dune-ish". Now, seeing the Sci-Fi trailer for Dune, it looks awfully Centauri-ish.
BTW, Chuda, you ain't an idiot. The Lynch Dune, as others have said here, is very good Lynch, just not very good Dune. -
Lynch has absolutely no business translating another person's work to the screen, but it is a visual masterpiece (even his version). Although I do sometimes wonder how it would have looked if he hadn't fired Geiger...
The more of Lynch's stuff I see, the less I like him, but I must agree that it does fit into his style pretty well (Edgy Lynch Piece of Crap TM). -
The Lynch version, any version, is a good silent companion to the book. Read the book for the story, and look up occasionally for the splendid set design, costumes and camp. I loved the Atreides (sp) neo-Russian Tsar uniforms. Where can I get them? The Sardaukar black suits were a good counter-point to the Star Wars iconic white storm trooper armour. All in all, I think there are few SF movies that take that kind of effort to set up a 'look'.
-
The production values look good. I really liked the Lynch film, so I'll probably give it a looksee.
-
Do you think Lynch would've left the Ewoks in? Maybe with venom and tubes coming out of their heads. It certainly is an interesting concept. I wonder how Lucas and Lynch would've worked together.
-
My little brother and I watched Dune once on t.v. late at night. Much of the story didn't make sense right away, but we were INSTANTLY obsessed with it, without ever reading ONE word of Herbert's Dune prior. We watched it over and over again until we not only understood it, but started asking questions about the themes presented and the religious analogies. It's a great film to quite a few people. To this day, I have not read Herbert's Dune, and Lynch's film is one of my all-time favorites. He created another universe filled with fabulous creatures and interesting characters.

Dear Sci-Fi Channel,
Here I sit, eagerly anticipating the arrival of your new mini-series Dune, when a thought occured to me. If you're going to rehash the entire Dune movie into an extended and more easily digestible 6 hour long series, why not go one better and continue the project with the rest of the Dune series? Lynch and company never got the chance in the 1980's even if they WERE sincere about making a sequel or two due to their Dune's spectacular failure at the box office. I think Sci-Fi has a wonderful opportunity to embark on this endeavour. So, all being fair in love and war, let me propose in advance to you the choice actor to play Leto Atreides II, the God Emperor of Dune: John Malkovich. Thank you very much.
Sincerely,
DoNotFeed -
...film of all time. I think its a masterpiece. And the book is my fave book. But I can't see the new TV series measuring up. It cant fail to please me given its source, but I just don't think it'll have the same vision as Lynch's version. Not that I can tell yet since the trailers wont work on my PC....
-
Superninja, you've truly earned being described as an idiot!
The book is amazing, my favorite book ever. It goes so much deeper then the movie did, and even then this miniseries could. The stuff between Thufer and Jessica towards the end, and other things, there's soo much more to the story. How you could be a big fan of the movie and not have read it...???
The books after Dune can be difficult to get into, but every literary critic on the planet agrees that Dune is a masterpiece.
For those of you that are big fans, you might want to check out the prequels written by Herbert's son. The first one (House Atreides) covered all kinds of fascinating stuff, such as exactly what the Baron has and how he got it (pretty cool...), and how Guild Navigators are made. The next one (House Harkonnen) comes out in early October. -
Yes, Paul is once again played by someone several years older than the character in the book, and it looks as if this attempt is going to be heavier, or at least more explicit, on the sex aspect than Herbert ever was.
Still, from what little has been shown so far it all seems to be closer in feel to the books than Lynch's movie was, and they have the time to tell the story in more detail, too.
Dune '84 had its moments, especially during the first hour or so, but once the Harkonnens crushed House Atreides and Paul found himself in the desert it the whole thing seemed way too rushed (often to the point of making little sense).
Kinda wish the blue-within-blue eyes didn't glow like Rudolph's red nose though. -

-
what exactly is your main problem?
Looks to me like everyone who disagrees with your opinion on Lynch's Dune is an idiot in your own particular universe. Well, let me in on the club, please. I liked it too! It's pretty cool actually.
The only parallels I found with any of his other films is his obsessive overuse of extreme close-ups. Comparing Dune to some
other Lynch film like, say, Eraserhead, is like comparing apples to fish, an excercise in futility. Anyone can watch Dune (perhaps some wont comprehend without having read the book) but only the truly demented can take multiple viewings of Eraserhead or Blue Velvet.
And so that I might add insult to injury, I thought Dune (the book) was a bloated piece of shit myself. Booooring.
And when you insult me, please use something more original than idiot. I thank you. -
Saw the commerical on the Sci-Fi channel....some parts looked good but others looked incredibly cheesy. Bad costumes and the Blond Paul? Whassup with that? But the main thing that bugged me was Baron Harkonnen's pronunciation of his name. Wrongo Bongo! He put the emphasis on the "har" instead of the "ko". Sounded dumb. But, I'll still check it out.
-
Well, I've listened to a tape of Frank Herbert reading exerpts from the book, and according to him, Harkonnen IS pronounced with an accent on the HAR, instead of the ON. After growing up with the movie it took me by surprise, but, really, it sounds much better.
-
...please feel free to leave out the crap-ass "thought narration" shit.
BTW, I'm 34th!!!!
