Encouraged by the huge success of “Under The Dome” CBS has ordered 13 episodes of the sci-fi series “Extant.”
Spoiler alert: It looks like it’s about an extraterrestrial that knocks up a hot astronaut (Halle Berry).
There was speculation that CBS might hand “Extant” over to its uncensored pay-cable channel Showtime, but it now looks like CBS is airing the project on its broadcast network this summer.
The script is by a newcomer named Mickey Fisher.
Steven Spielberg’s name is on “Extant” as executive producer, just as it is on “Under The Dome” and “Falling Skies.” Spielberg got the same credit on such shorter-lived projects as “Lucky 7,” “Smash,” “The River” and “Terra Nova.”
“Dome” was the most-watched TV series last summer if you don’t count football games, holding up in the ratings quite nicely despite the fact that Time Warner Cable wasn’t carrying CBS in New York, Los Angeles and Dallas/Ft. Worth for a while.
“Dome” got better ratings in its Monday timeslot than did “Hawaii Five-0” and “Hostages” (and than does current occupant “Intelligence”). It will be back this summer, perhaps as a lead-in to "Extant."
