Back in August 2013, there was an fascinating flurry of activity regarding THE DAY THE CLOWN CRIED - Jerry Lewis’ famously buried 1972 film chronicling the wrenching tale of a clown in a German concentration camp during WWII. The script for this film is strange and utterly compelling, and culminates in one of the most harrowing and haunting final sequences I’ve ever encountered (in concept alone, regardless of how well executed it might or might not have been).
The movie was disappeared for a number of reasons, some of which can be found in THIS interview with Lewis. Precious little material has been seen from the picture, save for THIS insight from Harry Shearer and THIS small portion of BTS clipage.
Interestingly, there’s a new batch of material making the rounds today - on YouTube and noted by A.V. Club. More BTS stuff, more insight into the production of this this ever elusive and highly provocative unreleased title.
Will THE DAY THE CLOWN CRIED ever see the light of day? I would hesitate to bet. The vibe from Lewis (and legalities/politics which may still be surrounding the film) would seem to suggest ‘no.’ But…having been in my line of work for many years…it’s impossible not to NOTE the surprising amount of talk and material about TDTCC that have recently surfaced. Historically, this often means that something is afoot. Time will tell. Until it does, here’s a further look into the making of the movie...
