Search For GHOSTS OF MARS Replacement Continues!!

Published at:  Jul 28, 2000 8:13:50 AM CDT

Hey, everyone. "Moriarty" here. Well, with Courtney Love out of the picture due to her ankle injury -- coughbullshitcough -- Screen Gems, Sony, and John Carpenter are searching for a suitable replacement. I've seen names like Famke Jannsen and Michelle Yeoh being bandied about elsewhere on the 'net, with people reporting that the role was officially filled. Well, that ain't the case. Yeoh was approached, but she's got major scheduling issues that seem to make it impossible. The coolest possible choice was RUN LOLA RUN's Franke Potente, but she's officially passed now, and an offer has been made instead to a certain long-limbed lovely who we all first enjoyed in oh-so-many-ways in SPECIES. Yes, Natasha Henstridge is the current fave for the role. We'll see what happens in the next few days, since a choice has to be made, no matter what.

    First!

    by lenny nero

Hey, I'm just glad that it ain't Courtney Love. I'd like to put my vote in for either of the Fs, Franka or Famke, even if Lola's already passed.

    Natasha Henstridge is horrible

    by vampire hunter d

Who gives a crap what she looks like. She can't act worth a shit. Great maybe she'll be naked again, so what I saw it before. Just rent a porno movie dude. Better yet get a girlfriend. This movie sounds real cool. Even cooler now that Love isn't in it, but you start putting a lot of crap actors in it. It will tank like Waterworld.

    Famke is it

    by holidill

They should hire Famke for the job she would rock. Also I thought I heard somewhere, be it in my local paper, or on E!, or Entertainment Tonight, I don't remmeber, that she has all ready signed because filming starts next week. Let's hope she's the one. Oh by the way completely off subject, Jennifer Aniston is marrying Brad Pitt this weekend. Brad's a lucky man.

    AAARRRGGGHHH!!! MY EYES!!!

    by seabird

That is the most repulsive Harry animation yet! Talk about ruining a classic shot! I will never be the same again... Anyway, why is this movie getting such negative buzz? I saw a preview for it and it looked pretty cool. I mean, Val Kilmer may be a real bastard to work with, but I happen to enjoy most of his movies. Except for At First Sight (or whatever it was called). Mira (SIGH) Sorvino was the only thing that made it watchable IMHO...

    dalis car

    by socket level

I agree with Dalis Car's coment that a strictly attracitve actress is the wrong way too go. You need talent along with beauty in these kind of roles (sci-fi is hard to sell and fails often, ie: Mission/Battlefield earth have to be a couple of the worst movies of all time and they even both had a very talented cast). famke Jenssen would be a great choice, she has an ample amount in both of these qualities. so HOLIDILL is on the right track.

my only qualm with dalis car is that he/she has made an argument based on want he/she sees as a fact. how good Natasha Henstridge is as an actress is a subjective issue. i personally think Natasha's acting ability has improved a great deal since she was first in "Species." even though the film wasn't all that great, she held her own in "The Whole Nine Yards." in "Dog Park" she also brings something original to a role that could seem cliche (this however wasn't a good movie however).

    peace

Seabird, I think you are getting your Mars movies mixed up. Val Kilmer is in Red Planet. The article with the trailer was in last weeks cool news.

Who played the girl in that moobie with the chick who played the drums and wore boxer shorts and there was some thing about a posh party being crashed by louts and ya know? in that moobie with the chick and the drums and the guy and...*shut the hell up Cartman!*

    by spike lee

JAMIE LEE CURTIS! Think about it, Carpenter's most successful film was Halloween as was Jamie Lee's. I think it would be cool and help give Carpenter the come back he needs.

    Poor John

    by sundown

It always seemed like John Carpenter was a god. The genius flowed freely and influenced me, just about everyone I know and many of the people who make films today from Walter Hill to James Cameron...SO WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH HIM?

We saw one of the greatest independent films (and biggest grossing) in Halloween which also happens to have th ehonor of being the only film to ever scare me and he follows it up with pure genius like Escape from NY and the Thing and Big Trouble. Not to mention the masterpiece Assault on Precinct 13. These novies crossed genres...hell they CREATED genres! All the while they were unique and you could see his hand in them. From Jack to McReady to Snake to Michael Myers to Napoleon he created REAL characters that deszpite the situations they were in you felt could exist in the room with you.

Now he makes parodies of himself. Escape from LA took the undertone of exploitation and sci fi camp in the original and played it up so much it became a parody of itself. Bad performances and fx well over their head...a horrible plot with meaningless cameos. It was like he was trying to make a horrible "big budget action" film. It used to be he played down his films doing only what could be done well with fx and saving the rest for imagination. Remember the effects in the Thing and how 20 years later they can blow the crap out of anything done with cg like the Faculty and other nonsence. Now he has become a cartoon. I see interviews with him and it seems like he is lost.

Lastly we have Ghosts. Nearest I can tell it involves a Prisoner being transferred to a mars penal colony where a long dead alien machine is possessing people and has wiped out all bu tthe prisoners. This sounds a lot like Assault to be honest. But if he crafts solid character and can just pull together a story maybe harkening to the past will right him. I truly hope so...he HAD a great story in Vampires and while James Wood seemed real the film lacked IT...the thing that makes the Matrix, the Matrix and Lost in Space forgotten. He has some talent in Ice Cube ....and Famke can save one of these films (see Deep Rising) if he gets her...I hope the Michelle Yeow and rumors of Matrix fight coordinater are both wrong as this idea doesn't scream for these types of fights and it would seem trendy and blah (like Escape from LA) but Famke can do well in this type of film.

Overall its off to a bad start with Love freaking out. I hope he can break through and become relavent again in the new era of popcorn movies with actual plots like Matrix and Mummy. But thats just mt 2 cents and it is worth 2 cents less than that.

What do you REALLY think zim?

    by thehound

    It's a bit fuzzy...

I happen to like Carpenter. I do, however, agree that his last few projects have left a funny taste in my mouth (could be just the flavor of DVDs...). I read Vampire$ and believe me the book was MUCH better. And unfortunately Escape from L.A. was a fiasco (and I LOVE Kurt Russell). Don't even get me started with why it is on DVD while EFNY has yet to be released. My Director's Cut of EFNY on LD is the only reason I still have my LaserDisc player. Carpenter's earlier ventures were much more satisfying. I still think he should do a sequal to The Thing. Maybe base it on the comic mini series that came out some years ago.

    Vampires, well, sucked

    by skytalker

Carpenter's films have been so bad for so long now that the most disturbing aspect in them has gone unnoticed: The synth! Music he "composes" to these crapfests is the true horror of these horrible films.

    I NEED ANSWERS!!!

    by skllbns

I'm glad I'm not the only one in the world who thinks Courtney Love is a talentless hack psycho. She and Angelina Jolie look like a couple of crack whores all dressed up to cruise a Shriner's convention. Check out Nick Broomfield's movie KURT AND COURTNEY; it's extremely biased but even taking that into account, she comes off as an evil person. ALSO: What really happened if she didn't hurt her ankle? Does anyone know? Is it drugs? Is she still dating Ed Norton? I NEED ANSWERS PEOPLE!!

Where is that pneumatic wonder of "The Rocketeer," Jennifer Connoly? Did Bill Campbell bury her in the backyard when he was done with her? That was a helluva a great film that was totally mismarketed. I want to see muh Jen-nay in another film ASAP.

    by methos

Both Famke Janssen and Franke Potente are equally impressive, but let me cast my vote for the incredible Irene Jacob. If Carpenter could cast her; I promise to show up on opening weekend dressed in my Optimus Prime costume I constructed out of spare cardboard boxes and aluminum foil during the summer of 1985.

  • Since when did this talentless junky whore become an actress? She is the most repulsive person around, except maybe George W. Bush. No wait. George W. Bush is DEFINITELY more repulsive than her.

    by kurgen

Let's face facts, if COurtney Love is cast in a role, it's pretty much gauranteed that anybody could do the part. I say Let Carpenter make another female scream queen like he did with an unknown chick named Jamie Lee Curtis way back yonder. PICK AN UNKNOWN!

    What about Big trouble 2?????

    by xnightcrawlerx

i know john carpenters movies have been bad and then really bad in the 90's but if any of you could recall big trouble in little china a box office blunder that if you ask me is way before its time and one of the best action films ever made. The movie had some of the best action and artwork of its time and still today lights up my eyes. the fx in it where some of the best seen in the 80's. Even though it failed in the box office it still has a larger fan following than alot of the so called big blockbuster movies. One prob with making a new movie would be if kurt would do it and second if it turns out like the sequel to escape from new york i will not even name the film because if you ask me it should have never been filmed. The best way to do a new big trouble movie would be to call it something else nothing with the old name in it and have just jack burton and wang and egg in it. It would be so great to see them back on the big screen. Just a idea i know he said he would not make one because the movie didnt make money the first time around but if you can make escape from la make money in the box office than you can make money off just about anything. damn it i said that crappy movie name oh well. WELL I KNOW NOTHING WILL COME OF THIS I JUST HOPE HE MAKES THE DAMN BIG TROUBLE AND LITTLE CHINA DVD
