Kevin Smith strikes back while at San Diego ComiCon

Published at:  Jul 27, 2000 12:29:12 AM CDT

Well Father Geek here with Bombat1's report on the great Kevin Smith panel at ComiCon last week. I caught Kevin myself at some other panels and he was in fine form, he brought the house down, very funny guy, yet full of real information and sound advice...

Bombat here giving the first and probably only story ever. Enough
pleasantries though, lets get to business.

So here I am at San Diego Comic-Con at the spotlight and low and behold
Mr. Kevin Smith spills the beans on his upcoming film. First it wont be
Clerks 2 Still Clerkin as stated at the end of Dogma. It will be however the
LAST film of the Askewniverse series, putting an end to the ongoing stories,
settings (New Jersey), and sadly characters, including the Legendary JAY AND
SILENT BOB!!!! The mourning may begin. There is a title, though he wont
disclose it, no matter how many times you ask (dammit). The film however
will include a roundup of past characters including Mr. Jason Lee as Brodie
(Mallrats) and his character from Chasing Amy ( i cant remember the name) at
the same time. Im sure Mr. Affleck will probably show as well (for the
ladies out there).

Kevin also discussed his ill fated Clerks Cartoon show (by the way F$*k
you ABC!!) announcing that 6 episodes will be released on DVD in January
along with a Special Edition Dogma DVD. He then proceeded to show us an
unaired episode of Clerks, pretty funny stuff.

Mr. Smith then discussed the aquisition of the Fletch (maybe franchise)
rights, in which it would take place when he was younger, that would be
closer to the novels instead of the more slapstick ones done by the man
himself Mr. Chevy Chase. He hinted that he was thinking about Jason Lee as
the lead role. Lets hope he comes through.

Lastly, he gave a good 20 minute speech about his involvment in the
Superman movie. Basically he wrote a script, which included a look back at
Krypton when young Clark was Kal-El, and a scene where Braniac would be in
the Fortress of Solitude. The producer, however fascinated with the
Discovery Channel, was pretty lame and wanted some lame ass stuff in it, ie.
a fight with a huge spider and/or Polar bear, (for more on the giant spider
watch some movie the producer did a while ago, I think it's called Wild Wild
West or something). Anyway, to make a long story short he was ousted by Tim
Burton's crew and the guy who looks nothing like Clark Kent, Nicolas Coppola
(Cage).

Well enjoy the info,if you want to hear more, just write me at Bombat1@aol.com . Peace and remember "Adventure, excitement, a Jedi craves
not these things"

*sniff* "But hey, cheer up there guy, this just means he can branch out as a film maker." *snicker* I really don't have a comment other than they should have guys writing these scripts that actually know the source material. I hope he can make his way into these new generation scripts and make them good or at least passable. I have high hopes.

    Jason Lee in Chasing Amy

    by superman2k

His name was Banky you idiot. Haven't you ever read "Catcher in the Rye" where the main characters name was Holden "as in Ben Affleck's character in "Amy" and he had a gym coach by the name of Ed Banky where Jason Lee gets his name. In case you didnt notice Kevin Smith does this alot. Either with Catcher in the Rye Of Jaws (Broodie, Hooper, Quint). Do a little research man!

    by pr_frink

Interesting. I thought the Clerks 2 thing would be a cool idea. You know, the whole askewniverse comes to an end with the same people it started with. Oh well. As long as it has Brodie in it, I'm extremely happy. I'm just wondering if he'll still be the host of the Tonight Show? I guess we'll find out.

    Too tired...

    by spell checker

If this were any other night, I'd go on and on in a gracious soliloqy the length of which would rival even the long-winded 'dialogue' that Kevin Smith is so undeservedly famous for. As it stands, I am way too freakin' tired to talk about how boringly unoriginal and flat anything Smith touches becomes... The only people this guy appeals to are 13 year old high school boys, and those who have the mind of 13 year old high school boys. In other words, most of the guys that post in Talkback... Anyone who's actually read the mess of a script that Smith wrote for Superman can tell you the REAL reason it was rejected was because it was a STINKER. Which is pretty much what you get when you procrastinate like a slacker and don't write the damn thing until the couple nights before it's due - which is exactly what he did. I admire the fact that he made himself famous, and seemed to work his ass off for it - he enjoys what he does, he's living his dream, so more power to him. It's just too bad he doesn't have any talent for it. But then again, I guess that can describe most of Hollywood.

    by cds

Or does anyone else wonder about the recent avalance of breathless news from some comic book convention on a movie site? Or for that matter Kevin Smith news, which belongs on a comic book site, certainly not a movie site. One more time, comic books recorded on film do not movies make. Learn to distinguish between the two forms of expression, at least one being considered art.

    You can't call him Hollywood

    by danetheman98

Kevin Smith is not Hollywood bound and probably never will be and thats good for us. You see many filmmakers find themselves right in the middle of the Hollywood muddle and like a rock star from Indiana, they get caught up in the vices and start buying into the Hollywood bs. You know what I mean, the money, power, drugs, large special effects budgets. Kevin Smith still has finger on the pulse, and this makes for interesting films. The pulse you ask? The pulse is what Spielberg had when he made Jaws and Close Encounters of the Third Kind. The pulse is what Francis Ford had before movies like Peggy Sue got married and Tucker. Love him or hate him, Kevin Smith makes interesting movies (or at least funny, as in Mallrats case). Lets hope that this Fletch project has his imprint on it and not the Hollywood stamp of approval. Kevin stay in Jersey, keep reading comic books and for goodness sake keep hanging around that group of friends you have, you know, the ones you do every dvd commentary with, which sound like a bunch of friends talking %$#%&%.

    Superman script

    by stilt-man

I hear (from people who work with movie folks/still have friends, or connections) that his script sucked (stinked really). This is one case where Kevin should not pass the blame on the failure of his script to be picked up for use in the film on a "producer," or anyone else associated with the film. I agree that other people may have wanted to contribute stupid ideas...but bear in mind that they were supposedly contributing to an already lousy Kevin Smith script. I have no beef with Kevin , and admit I have not seen any of his films, but his article on the Sundance film festival for Premiere was funny and well written, and I thouroughly enjoyed his run on Daredevil. Maybe his written work does not translate well to the big screen, but as far as writing about films and working on comics, I say he should stick to that for the foreseeable future.

What is Wrong with Chevy Chase.

    by lazy boy

Have you Americans gone soft. Chevy Chase is the difinitive Fletch. No disrespect to Kevin Smith but Jason Lee would not be able to carry a movie of that size by himself, his style does not suit the character either. It was Chase's timing that made Fletch and Fletch Lives work.

    Re: cds

    by dave_f

First off, movies have never been the exclusive topic of this site. Harry's always covered comics, TV, even toys - basically, whatever he considers cool is fair game. If you don't like superheroes and comics stuff, as say, I dislike "Star Wars" prequel stuff, then just skip the stories on 'em. Simple, easy, logical. Oh, and your suggestion that the comic medium is incapable of producing that that elusive concept of "art"...well, I'm afraid that's just a mark of ignorance. You're probably one of those folks under the false impression that comics are synonymous with superheroes. 'Fraid not, even if most of the current comics-to-film adaptations *are* superhero flicks (excepting "Bone" and "From Hell"). What can I say, Americans do have a somewhat unhealthy love for their superheroes. But if you think that's all that comics are about, all that they're capable of, you might want to reacquaint yourself with the medium. Some pretty great, pretty diverse material out there. Yeah, and some stuff you might just call "art" too. Stop being reactionary and check it out.

Really, this is gonna rock from the preview artwork already out there on the net. Add to that Frank Miller's "Dark Knight Strikes Back" which will feature one-armed Oliver and the Question (!) and Green Arrow fans will be in heaven in 2001!

how can anyone like kevin smith, especially after

    by andenu

his stint on daredevil? that was one of the most out of synch, forced and arrhythmic things i've ever read. and in its collected form, he takes on this snooty attitude towards those who didn't like it, something to the effect of, people don't want to read comics, they wanna look at them. please. the shit looked fine, it just was over-written and shitty-written.
clerks was entertaining for what it was, but once he lost the excuse of being an amateur, it was apparent that the guy is just retarded. ok, i never saw mallrats, but chasing amy, his stint on dd, and the absolutely terrible dogma - these are all signs of a moron run amok. the thing is, he's a pretty good moron. the more base and stoopid humor in dogma was the only glimmer of light in the whole thing. he could make a pretty good porky's-type movie if his pathetic intellect would stop getting in the way and attempting to communicate. either way, stay away from comics, please. if i want word-heavy comics, i'll read alan moore or even - god forbid - chris claremont.

    Dogma DVD SE

    by goatbag

Kevin Smith visited my college (yay UMass) in February this year and said that the plan for the special edition DVD was for a October/November release. He also mentioned something about Miramax raping fans for money. Hopefully the schedule hasn't slipped much since then.
On the idea of Kevin Smith and Jason Lee doing Fletch, WOOHOO! When he talked about his meeting with Chevy Chase and the original work on Fletch, you could see how much he wanted to make the movie well. If he can get Lee for it then yahoo!

    by rockstarjebus

Ok, I'm getting tired of all you stupid fucks constantly bitching about how this or that news is old and how harry needs to come up with breaking news, blah, blah, blah... SHUT THE FUCK UP ALREADY! What the hell? If you see a fucking story that you've already read then fuck don't read it. Christ, do you people have nothing better to do than come on here and bitch about stupid bullshit? The X-men's costumes are black, the Spider-Man drawing is too muscular, Harry isn't a fanboy, I hate this stupid site, Ain't it cool news sucks, blah blah blah blah. And to top it all off it's you same stupid cock suckers who come back to this very same site 3 times EVERY day to simply complain even more about how shitty the site is. If you don't like it, then go the fuck away, there are people on here who don't spend every fucking minute of their spare time on the internet looking at every fucking movie site that exists, and may just be seeing certain stories on here for the first time. So please spare us all and just put a gun in your mouth and blow your fucking worthless brains all over your fucking naked Laura Croft drawings.

I just have to give Kevin Smith props...

    by pissant

and those who have read my rantings on here know that I don't give "props" to Hollywood schmoes very often. But Kevin Smith is the one of the few people in the last decade that has written actual good scripts.
His movies make both fanboys like yourselves happy, and appeal to literate people like me who would rather hear good dialogue then watch a comic book hero get involved in a car chase. "Chasing Amy" is his best film, I think, mainly because it was the first non-Woody Allen realistic love story Hollywood has produced in quite a while. But he hasn't made a film that I haven't liked yet, and if he can make a "Fletch" movie that doesn't come off as contrived or annoying, the bastard should get an Oscar.

    TECHNO MAGE

    by andenu

that's a cool name. anyway, i wasn't at all complaining that someone made me watch/read his stuff, nor was i expressing unhappiness that i did. as i said, i kind of liked clerks, i stumbled into a room of people watching chasing amy. the daredevil was sitting around my house and it looked really good. people give smith a lot of credit, so i gave him a few shots. my only point is, he's not that good at what he does. so why do people like him, then? i don't know. my guess is that he speaks in a language and deals with things that certain types of people heavily identify with, and that there is just not a lot of. this doesn't mean he does it well. quite the contrary - he sucks. my abiding interest in the subject is cause many of the people who like him are similar in their interests and outlooks to me. but i think they are being uncritical because of the subject matter and approach he uses, which seem to jazz these folks to no end. or maybe not. i just can't imagine anyone with half a brain finding "dogma" clever, insightful, witty, or anything like that on any level whatsoever.

    Just don't bother

    by pavan

I have a small question to all the people complaining about Kevin Smith:
If you hate him so much, then why
the fuck do you watch his movies, read his comics and read the news about him?
I mean, I hate Joel Schumacher, so I didn't see 8MM and don't read anything about him. Why can't you stupid fuckers do the same thing?
You guys actually pay money to go to the cinema, buy his comics and waste your time to read his news just so that you can trash him on the aint-it-cool talk back board?
That's the most pathetic thing I've ever heard.
