TOLKIEN Biopic is in the Works!

Hey guys! Horrorella here...

Peter Jackson has stunned audiences with the LORD OF THE RINGS films, and the second chapter in THE HOBBIT trilogy is set to open in just a couple of weeks. But now Tolkienites can rejoice in another film related to Middle Earth - a biography of the author himself, J.R.R. Tolkien is reportedly in the works.

According the LA Times, a biopic entitled TOLKIEN (said to be in the vein of FINDING NEVERLAND, the story of Peter Pan creator J.M. Barrie), will tell the story of the writer's formative years at Pembroke College and his experiences as a soldier in World War I (which affected him greatly). A script is currently being written by David Gleeson (COWBOYS & ANGELS), a Tolkien scholar and enthusiast of all things Middle Earth.

Several attempts at a film based on the life of Tolkien has been in the works over the years, but none have come to fruition. One such project was MIRKWOOD, which was something of a fantastical account of his work as a codebreaker during World War II. That project was halted by the Tolkien estate, who are known to be very protective of the author's work and legacy. It is unknown if TOLKIEN will run into the same obstacles down the road. I'm sure it depends greatly on the script and the direction they choose to take the story.

I hope the project moves forward and tells a captivating story. Tolkien was one of the 20th century's most prolific writers, and the contributions that he made to literature and fantasy are immeasurable - it would be fantastic to have a story devoted to his life and to the events that would go on to influence his work.

What do you guys think?
