Trailer for THE PAST, from the director of A SEPARATION and starring THE ARTIST's Berenice Bejo!

Papa Vinyard here, now here's a little somethin' for ya...

The domestic trailer for THE PAST (a.k.a. LE PASSE), Asghar Farhadi's first film after his A SEPARATION took the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar last year, has dropped today, and it's a moody, low-key piece of advertising. It gets across the premise of the film, which involves an estranged husband visiting his wife in Paris to finalize their divorce, while providing a condensed version of the snowballing tension that ends up dominating the film. I was able to catch this film (with my super Iranian powers…just kidding, it played at AFI Film Fest last week), and while I don't see it making Farhadi 2 for 2 at this year's Oscars, it is an immediate, raw piece of work in much the same way A SEPARATION was, with killer performances all across the board. It's nice to see that Sony Pictures Classics conjured up a legit trailer to kick off their marketing campaign instead of just sewing the showiest moments together just to catch your eye.

P.S. Aside from pulling off another great performance, after her adorable Oscar-nominated turn in THE ARTIST, I have to say, Berenice Bejo is freaking stunning in this movie. Even while the nature of her new relationship may be somewhat awkward and messy, you never for a second wonder why these two smart, decent guys are pulled into her orbit. Michel Hazanavicius, you're a lucky devil. Now get Dujardin and give us another OSS 117 movie!

THE PAST (LE PASSE) becomes present on December 20th.
