“The Returned” is a mesmerizing French series about long-dead people who keep returning to their homes. It’s a bit like “The 4400” in that “the returned” haven’t aged, and possess no memory of the years they’ve spent away.
The second episode has a lot of pitcher, shotgun and shovel violence.
If subtitles don’t frighten you, you may discover this is your favorite new fall show. Better than “Masters of Sex.” Better than “Agents of SHIELD.”

Almost everything on broadcast hit or matched season lows last Thursday, including “Scandal,” “Grey’s Anatomy,” “The Millers,” “The Crazy Ones,” “Parenthood,” “The Michael J. Fox Show,” “Sean Saves The World,” and “Vampire Diaries.”
A repeat of “It’s The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown” doubled the ratings of the last new episode of “Once Upon A Time In Wonderland” in the same timeslot.
The SNL Halloween special was easily the highest-rated thing on NBC last Thursday.
