Robert Patrick Is Scully's New Partner!

Published at:  Jul 20, 2000 1:54:34 PM CDT

Greetings, X-philes! ROBOGEEK here with a short and sweet tidbit while Harry and Jay are covering the San Diego Comic Con.

Numerous sharp-eyed AICN readers have deluged our collective mailboxes today with news gleaned from the Hollywood Reporter online, where it's been reported that Robert Patrick ("T2," "Cop Land," "The Faculty,") has been cast as Scully's new partner on "The X-Files" this coming season.

While part of me really wanted to see Carter & Co. draft Lance Henrickson's Frank Black character from "Millennium" into service (and another part of me really wanted to see Bruce Campbell), I personally respect this decision, as Patrick is an exceedingly underrated actor who deserves a chance to shine -- and who I think could be a very strong presence on the show, offering interesting new dynamics for Gillian Anderson to play off of. (And, yes, that gets the award for run-on sentence of the day, thank you.)

So with all due respect to those of you who might be angry that your personal favorite choice wasn't picked, let's give him a chance before passing judgment.

Robert Patrick will be better than Duchovny. He can act. But BRUCE would have been cool too.

    by bandito

I think that Duchovny is underrated as an actor too though.. The X-FIles Wierd/funny/spoof episodes are the best of the lot, and his legendary performance on Larry Sanders, not to mention the Simpsons should have presented him as a comic talent in a no-tas-funny-but-still-very-funny Charles Grodin type of thing.

He's a better actor than Duchovney, that's for sure!

    by mdh

He'll sure be better than that ungrateful sour little Oh My God I Got Famous and Rich, Isn't It Horrible little big-nosed prick Duchovney. The good news is after Playing God and Return to Me, when the show ends, he'll be known as David Who-chovney.

    Bruce Campbell and Robert Patrick

    by private ryan

Okay, Robert Patrick is pretty cool, but I was so excited when I heard the Bruce rumor, I can't help but feel a little dissapointed by this news. It would have been so sweet! I don't even watch the X-files regularly, but if Bruce had been added to the show, I would have become a loyal viewer. Sigh...the T-1000 will do just fine, but he won't convince me to start watching regularly.

    Deserved props for Patrick

    by sabrina

This is great news. I've had much more respect for Patrick after his turn as the gambling-addicted high school friend of Tony Soprano on "The Sopranos" this past season. He was terrific, and should have been nominated for an Emmy in the drama guest actor category. Now I'm curious as to how Carter and Co. will play him. Will he be sympathetic to Scully (and Mulder's) quest, or will he be more like Peter Outerbridge's insufferable by-the-book agent on "Millennium?" We'll see...

Without Mulder, Scully is now going to be the believer of the X-Files team, and she will have to convince Patrick's character of the underlying truth to the paranoia and conspiracy. She'll have Skinner on her side.

    by reverend dave

Thank you very much Sabrina, for pointing out Patrick's role as Tony Soprano's friend, who gets into deep trouble gambling high-stakes poker and has to take extreme measures to get out. Add that to his roles in Copland and Faculty, and we see he's capable of coolness. And Mr. Nobody, Patrick was way scarier in human form than the "special effect" you're so fond of. That T-1000 had what war veterans refer to as the "Thousand Yard Stare" and it was scary even without morphing.

    by vich1

This last season it seemed as if Chris Carter lost his marbles. He's turned the show into a comedy. I've watched the show for about 5 years, and this season was the absolute WORST. Carter has taken "creative control" to new self-indulgent heights.

    by naysayer#666

    Yeah, strange decision..
I would've personally LOVED to have seen my fave character actor Bruce "Hail to the King, baby" Campbell cast as Duchovny's replacement. The "Baby, you got real ugly".. or "it was just pillow talk baby, that's all.." wisecracking bastard would have been an ever so perfect foil for Scully..But, yeah.. Carter knows what he's doing (most of the time).
So I'll accept the T2 star.. and secretly wish he dies.
So Scully could ask Bruce, "Are all new FBI agents loud-mouthed braggarts like you?"
So he could answer.. "No, just me baby, just me.."

  • It's funny to read things like, "RObert Patrick is a better actor than David, so he'll be great. But I would have liked to see Campbell instead."

So you're saying Campbell is a better ACTOR than David? Good God man. I just don't get the fanboy wet dream of Campbell. He's a b-grade campy actor... he's tried to nail serious parts, but can't deliver a line.

I can say that I like d him in the Evil Dead films... because they were b-grade camp... suitable for him. I won;t even mention his tv show... damn it's bad.

But he wasn't right for a series that doesn't need anymore self parody or humor. They needed a strong actor to jumpin there.

Now that Chris Carter got rid of a sleepwalking David Duchovney--someone who has been bored with the show for a while now--and replaced him with an actor who should be eager to sink his teeth into the role, maybe they can start writing some original, intelligent episodes again.

Do you guys really think Duchoveny didn't have any say in the new casting? Especially with the FX lawsuit that is still simmering. David will be showing up next season, albeit rarely, but when he does do you really think he would want to have to compete with a charachter like Campbell's. Patrick is much more low key and less of a threat, plus I guarentee his salary and residual deal is much lower than Campbell's would have been.
If I was Bruce or his agent, I would tell him to lay low for the next couple of years. He's become pigenholed and needs to re-invent himself, as all good to great actors should do every few years.
My real fear is that Carter is going to feel obliged to inject music by Filter into some of the episodes.

I love Campbell, he's a great guy and a fine actor but his range his nearly nil. He basically plays himself all the time and unfortunately that's just play annoying at times. Hell, he played a wisecracking Ash-like character in "Herbie The Love Bug". I can do without seeing Ash yet AGAIN. If I wanna see Campbell wisecrack I can watch him do it in Army of Darkness. Oh, and FYI: Anyone who thinks Bruce would make a good Spiderman is totally insane and so out of touch with reality that they need be placed in Quarantine just in case the rest of us get what they have. Now Bruce as J. Jonah Jameson, THAT would work. I just hope Sam Raimi doesn't turn Spider-Man into the 3 stooges with webslingers. Nyuck Nyuck Nyuck. HB777

The ongoing storylines may suffer for it, but the comedy episodes are what let new viewers in on the show. That, and I think the main storyline is boring overblown crap.

But I can see why longtime fans would be annoyed. Deep Space 9 had the same problem, and it REALLY bugged me.

    A true opinion

    by 2gold

X-files is dead, plain and simple. Chris Carter has lost his touch and not Robert Patrick, Bruce Campbell, Bruce Willis or god can save this series. It has went too far, the should have just ended instead of keeping it going. X-files was at one time dark and now it's just well crap. I'm still expecting a episode based on fart jokes. At least with Campbell we would have know the series is a comedy but instead we are preparing to ruin the career of a decent actor for what? Another stupid season of a once good show. Patrick should have stayed on the Sopranos but instead he has hung himself. He has ended his career which he nearly killed with "Class of 1999 only with aliens" I mean "The Flacity" and that great film "Dusk til no one cares: From Dusk til Dawn 2"
Maybe he'll get lucky and FOX will kill the show halfway through the fall when no one watches.

    by shaxpeare

Since Duchovny is going to be back for the last few episodes of the season, Patrick's tenure on the show has a pre-set time limit. So, If the famous X-files sexual chemistry works out, Patrick's character and Scully can GET IT ON without screwing up the show. Think about it... Then Mulder comes back and here's Scully foolin' around with her new partner! Ooooh, tension! Or whatever.

    the REAL question...

    by bo_d75

I think most everyone is missing the point here...and that is 'DID THE DEDICATED, TRUE X-FILES FANS REALLY NEED A 'NEW' CHARACTER TO STEP IN AS SCULLY'S TEMP. PARTNER?" Now, I'm a fanboy so of course my vote was casted in with the name of Bruce Campbell on it but, better things will come his way(Still say he should have a cameo as Eddie Brock/Venom in the Spiderman movie...come on Sam it would be friggin' great) and as for Robert Patrick, I can't say a whole lot about him 'cause I haven't seen him in many movies aside from T2 & the Faculty. Alright, so I thought he was 'okay' in both, T2 being great and Faculty, sucking ass. But, aside from this is why in the hell can't Chris Carter just put in an already existing character for a while? It is temporary, right? Or are they gearing up for potential for a 9th season without any of the originals(YUCK). I mean what is going on in that head of CC? Anything? HELLLOOOOO? You fucking jerked us around this long, laddy it's nice to see your not changing anything. WOuldn't want you to do anything rational now...First, oh Samantha wasn't kidnapped(he,he,he) she was taken away by a bunch of grade-school fairies and now twinkles in the sky. Shit, puke, go on.
Then, instead of just giving the Lone Gunmen their respected time on the show...you give them their own show? I like them...but are they REALLY that deserving? And will the show really make it? Well, based on CC's 2 previous attempts at 'side-projects(of sorts), the answer would be "not-likely". I believe a man that goes by the name of Joss Wheldon split character from one great show, Buffy(at one time), into two shows. Now, viewers are subjected by 'replacment'-type supporting cast(characters) instead of having a wonderful, reinforced, and solid show. Now, both Buffy and Angel suck ass(sorry people ot the damn truth).

SO WAKE THE FUCK UP CHRIS CARTER,(I WON'T EVEN GO INTO THE WAY YOU 'EASILY' TOOK CARE OF THE SYNDICATE STORYLINE,INSTEAD OF DEVELOPING BACKGROUNDS,...SORRY GUESS I JUST DID WHAT I SAID I WASN'T GOING TO), HOW MANY CHANCES AT REDEMPTION DO YOU THINK YOU GET CC? I'M SORRY IT IS YOUR SHOW, BUT UNFORTUNATELY YOU MUST APPEASE FANS LIKE ME IF YOU WANT FUTURE MERCHANDISE, FAN-BASE REVENUE & INCOME...GET IT, BUB? ...AND AS FOR THAT SCUM-SUCKING DAVID DUCHOVNY, I ALWAYS DEFENDED YOU THUS FAR NOW YOUR ON YOUR OWN, DIDN'T EVER HEAR OF YOUR NAME BEFORE THIS LITTLE T.V. SHOW AND I SURE AS HELL WONT AFTER IT EITHER. YOU WANT A MOVIE CAREER? 2 WORDS: DAVID 'where is he now?' CARUSSO. THAT'S IT DD, SORRY. BUT, YOU MADE THE SET OF THE X-FILES RE-LOCATE TO SUNNY, FAKE L.A. JUST SO YOU CAN TURN AROUND AND SHIT ON YOUR FANS AND THE SHOW THAT LETS YOU BUY THOSE 3-PIECE SUITS? WOW, WHAT A PRETENIOUS BASTARD.

...I feel ALOT better, as I had been keeping that bottled in for QUITE some time.

Don't worry though, I'll be sitting there, as well all of us, come this next fall season...praying & hoping something, anything will change. Should we 'trust no one' ?

    Later.
    D.

    Some suggestions

    by thegreatturtle

Once upon a time, I was a great fan of the X-Files. This past season was, uhm, a little rocky, although it still had some good moments. I do feel the need to post a little something about the show, in light of some comments that have been made.

    1. If you have never seen the show, or have hated it from its inception, or both (although I'm not sure how that is possible...) please feel free to sit down and shut up.

    2. If every comment from your keyboard is negative and non-constructive, please feel free to sit down and shut up. Give those little digits a rest from spewing vitriol and try to put together a coherent thought. If you don't like something, please go into detail about WHY you don't like it, and what can be done to fix it. That turns abuse into constructive criticism, and I think that the people who keep an eye on sites like this just might appreciate what you have to say.

    3. Yes, I am a Bruce fan. I love his work. I loved what he did in his one appearance in the X-Files. A large part of me wishes he had been picked. But it really doesn't matter who gets picked to play the part, as long as the character is well written. Whoever is picked is going to be an actor, and will be living up to Carter's vision of the new character. His input will just be in the finishing touches of the character. In the long run, perhaps this role will allow "that Terminator guy" to be recognized as more than just "that Terminator guy." Give the guy a chance, because I'm pretty sure he wants to do the best job he can.

    4. Regarding the slow death of the show, I don't think that has to be the case. Some of y'all (ye gods I love that word, and have adopted it into my vocabulary) remind me of fair-weather sports fans. If you think the scripts are bad, then offer up suggestions to make them better. And if all else fails, write your own! Join the proper guilds, and show the world what you can do, and what the X-Files should be. The show has served to start the careers of a few screenwriters (the episode about the big gator in the lake was written by a young Houstonian, and it was one of her first major sells). Don't just give up. Perhaps this will be the last season, or perhaps new talent will give it new life, and it will continue to entertain for a few more years. I mean, consider the alternatives! While its level of excellence may have slipped, it is still vastly more intelligent than, say, Young Americans.

Okay, I'm done. Thanks for following the critique to the end. And to those of you who strive to provide insightful comments, thanks. Keep up the good work.

    Optimisim people!

    by noswal

My main suggestion here is to look at the X-Files as a show! Don't think about the writing or what Chris Carter's going to do with Mulder or how David Duchovny's an ass. Look at it like a 10 year old boy would. Watch it as if it were real and you continually get engulfed in it and don't think "well man that was a poor lighting choice". Also, notice that Chris Carter is actually excited about this year. This is a good sign! The show's felt like it's been on automatic pilot for a year because no one wanted to be doing it anymore. It was basically for the money. But when they're excited about the storytelling possibilities, you know we're in for some good, old fashioned X-Files. Patrick could turn into the next Krycek. The year lacked because of the near death of the mythology. Now Mulder's missing. If Carter can pull of the magic he did in season two when Scully was abducted, we're in for a hell of a season. For better or worse, I'm excited about November.

First of all, good vibes to TheGreatTurtle for his voice or reason, and to AlienGonzales for his kickass funny top ten list.
Second of all, to nearly everyone else: shaaadaaaaap! Ya bunch of whining little freaks! What are you on? "Wahhh, I hate the X-Files, I watch every episode despite hating it intensely, read all the news about it, and post on the talkbacks, I hate it that much" - uh, hello? Stop watching it then! Friend of mine stopped liking the X-Files, so he stopped watching it. He didn't start bitching at me every 5 minutes about how much he hated it, he just stopped watching it and shut the fuck up about it. I don't like lots of stuff - so I avoid it, as it pisses me off. Simple! Very, very simple!
Yes, I love Bruce too, yes, I'm disappointed he's not in it. But hey, I think Robert kicks ass, when he's not choosing dodgy material, so either way I win. I like the X-Files. I always have. That is why I watch it. If you like it, watch it too. If you don't - then don't. And stay the fuck out of my face, you have nothing to offer me here. These talkbacks are degenerating into a pile of whinging ass-crack, if you don't like something then say it and piss off, don't scream it at me IN CAPITAL LETTERS SPLET WORNG and please, get a fucking life.
    Thankyou.

    Way to go Robert Patrick...

    by jackburton

and to all those that are uniformally blasting him just because Carter didn't pick who *you* wanted him to (in most cases the very cool, but overly campy Bruce Campbell) get a fucking life and at least give the new guy a shot before you rip him to shreds. If you see him in a couple of episodes (preferably with an open mind) and then hate him and think he was the wrong choice fair enough, but blasting him right now just makes you all look like whining crybabies. Personally Robert Patrick was my top pick so I couldn't be happier with the choice (given the four actors under consideration) and I think that Robert may well blow a few of you away with his legitimate acting range, especially those of you that have only seen him in Terminator 2 and The Faculty, and have missed his great turns in Copland, Fire In The Sky, Rosewood, Rag And Bone and the last season's The Sopranos, while he was the only good thing in the both Striptease and Ambushed, giving the only really good performances in what were ultimately both pretty damn bad films. As for you Duchovny/Mulder nuts, think of the new guy not as a replacement, but merely a new character, and give him a shot. I swear that if he ends up being as lame as Spender was then I'll be the first to bring a rope to the lynching party, but given the guys track record I actually think Robert Patrick is gonna be a damn cool addition to the show, and hopefully his presence will help trigger a much needed creative boost for the X-Files next season. The talent is there, lets just see if they can run with it.

Three good reasons why this is a good thing

    by xthecrovvx

    1. Robert Patrick has that kinda vibe to him, where he could play a pretty convincing FBI agent. 2. He might actually enjoy doing the show more than you could tell Duchovny was.(that is, if they actually avoid all the silly BS that was going on for a majority of last season) 3. Ya know, i just remembered that he's the brother of the guy from Filter(Richard Patrick...they look almost just alike, too). How cool would it be to get a little score assistance on a few episodes from the cool people behind "Hey Man Nice Shot", and "Welcome to the Fold"? Just a thought. Revolution is my name....

X-Files has been a dead, pathetic, carbon copy, stale show for the past two years. i couldnt bring myself to fully watch the episodes this past season because they were too horrible to sit through for more than 30 mins. The only one i got through was the Frank Black episode (witch begs the question how can they murder their shows so quickly, both Millennium and X-Files?) Lance is a god, its a shame Millennium lost its footing in that third season. But, back to the subject, i doubt the T-1000 casting will do one lick of good. They are dead creatively, at their very core, no new blood can save that. Its just a tired, tired show, stick a fork in it, bury it, wipe it off the face of tv., and thank your lucky stars there were five good seasons that you will be able to buy on DVD.

It's got to be the most appropriate actor for the role. Bruce is too funny, and I HATE the funny X-Files!

    Give it a damn chance....

    by magnus99

You guys screaming "Patrick is gonna suck" and "X-files is Dead!"
and blah blah this and that. Weren't you the same exact ones who were screaming "Singer is doing X-Men? That's gonna suck." and "An Aussie doing Wolverine? How is that?" a few months ago. And look, wow, this week I see your names there saying "Oh, it wasn't that bad. I thought it was pretty good, actually." and frickin' excited to see the sequal in another 2 years. Granted, Campbell is good and all in the Evil Deads, but this is THE FRICKIN' X-FILES!! They needed a BIG NAME to cover for the loss of a BIG NAME. We all know, come october or november, you'll all be back here with your tail between your legs, exactly like this week, saying the same thing you did this week: "It wasn't that bad...." c'mon...you know you will....and you're gonna watch it, and you're gonna enjoy it...and you all know that i am right...

    by xenoprobe

This is for whomever suggested that Scully and the new Agt. Dogget "get it on" in Mulder's absence- FUCK YOU, WITH A CAPITAL 'F'" If there are even any noromos out there any more, all I have to say is, are you bloody blind? Mulder and Scully asre so obviously in love with each other- there are no rebuttles left to disprove it. And, I am a minority in the shipper world- I happen to be of the few who think that Moose and Squirrel have yet to do the nasty. Despite their lack of full blown physical intimacy, these tow are in LOVE LOVE LOVE!!! So, screw the concept of even a hint at sexual tension between Scully and Doggett. FUCK IT!

    On a positive note...

    by mad prophet

With two miserably failed series, and The X-Files falling ratings, embarrassing Emmy whitewash (except for a couple of technical award noms), and this latest poor decision regarding the future of the show, we won't have to suffer Chris Carter's foolishness much longer. In fact, one more season, I figure.

If it was just a matter of failing to cast Campbell, then it wouldn't matter too much. But in combination with the fact that the previous season sucked ass WITH DUCHOVNY in every episode, Carter's missed-opportunity to potentially rejuvenate the show by casting someone with charisma (apparently a bad word among Carter and X-Files psychos) is incredible.

This will be like the dismal final seasons of The Dukes of Hazzard, or Battlestar Gallactica, where they tried to replace major cast members with virtual clones, instead of having the cajones to take the show in new directions with new character-types. And, of course, Patrick is about as close to the laconic, stiff-as-a-board, Duchovny-mumbler-type as you can possibly get.

    Patrick Is A Good Choice

    by barron34

The Producers went with someone who is not going to make the last season too outrageous, but who is a solid character actor that Scully can bounce off of.

Robert Patrick a BIG NAME!?!?. You have got to be joking. Maybe in direct-to-video land and in the eyes of the great Philippino b-movie king Cirio H. Santiago (for witch Patrick starred in Future Hunters aka. Spear of Destiny)? Yeah, i guess he is HUGE, what with credits like Warlords of Hell, Double Dragon, Decoy, Cool Surface. Yeah, hes been in some good movies, but he was utterly forgettable in them.

    Patrick, Filter and X-Files

    by darthjoxer

XTheCrowX brought up an interesting connection that didn't even occur to me; Robert and Richard Patrick are brothers. Richard Patrick's band Filter has collaborated with the X-Files on more than one occasion. On the TV soundtrack album, they contributed an original track entitled "Bro." Also, on the movie soundtrack they recorded a cover of the old classic "One is the Lonliest Number." As well as this, "Hey Man Nice Shot" was featured in the episode in which Giovanni Ribisi guest-starred playing a teenager with the power to conduct lightning. I am not implying nepitism, but I can't help but wonder if Robert Patrick's relation to Filter helped to influence Chris Carter's decision on this matter. Still, I think that Robert Patrick is an excellent choice for the skeptical, by the book Agent Doggett. Any thoughts?

    if they value fans/franchise

    by matahari

This would be a great time to recover ratings and save the movie franchise. Great stories are what Outer Limits/Twiglight Zone are all about. Without the Mulder/Scully relationship, X-Files is just Outer Limits or Twilight Zone. Many people who have watched X-Files longer than I, felt cheated by the build up of the relationship, then the let down of the following season. The character relationship development was poorly handled. When Scully finds Mulder, they need to recover what's been lost. Otherwise, it's time to let the show die quietly, and along with it, thoughts of a franchise movie. Without the relationship, it has not legs. The ratings say it all.

    Forever Phile

    by agtspooky

As much as I agree with quite a few of you all on the fact that XF episodes have been lame in recent times, I will continue to be a loyal fan. Seven years I have watched M & S investigate the paranormal and I don't plan on stopping now. Now, what I do think is that season five was the last GOOD season. Once FTF came out, only about two-three eps a season have been REALLY good. I miss that scare factor CC used to have going...that edge of your seat excitement while watching.
Alot of things DD says I totally disagree with, but he is on our sides with this one, he has said, the XF scribes basically suck. I don't know if it was the move to LA or what, but things sure haven't been the same since then.

Now, as far as this Patrick guy, I was totally pulled back into the show when I saw "Requiem." It was one of the best season finale's the show has had. Now, I think Patrick will portray a real hard-ass, who CC wants us to hate. He wants the fans to look forward to Mulder's reappearance later in the season. Done right, it could make for some excellent storys. And he is committed for the entire season...
I still wish though, that CC would have made more use of Skinner and Krycek rather than cast a new guy...

    Bring on Patrick

    by torchsong

I'm hoping they let his character be like the hick trash he played in Striptease (which was a GREAT movie, you losers...Burt Reynolds should have been given the Oscar for this one, not Boogie Nights). It'd be awesome to see Scully put up with a lecherous, beer guzzling dude who injects wolf morphine into his system to stay sober. I've always liked Robert Patrick, and while I'm not naive enough to think this will keep the X-Files onscreen, I know I'll watch every episode until it does die. Or until Patrick gets his litl'n back again.

    Should have been Frank Black

    by uisce

...a marvelous character betrayed by a plot-crash after Season Two.
Black would have been a natural partnered with Scully, especially given the nature of their work. Pity, really.
