MAMA director Andres Muschietti to take over for Len Wiseman on the upcoming MUMMY reboot!

Hey Yo, Draven here.

Yay, more sequel/remake/reboot news!

We got word at the end of July that Len Wiseman would no longer be directing the planned reboot of the MUMMY franchise. We now have word on who is replacing him, as THR is reporting that Universal and producers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci have decided on Andres Muschiett (MAMA) to helm the upcoming reboot.

The reboot will reportedly feature new characters and be set in the modern day. We don’t have any other details about the film so it is hard to say what the connection will be to the 1932 original or the 1999 remake as they were both set in the 1920’s. My guess would be that Universal is just trying to use built-in property recognition (because that worked out so well for them with BATTLESHIP) and that this will have very little connection to either previous incarnation of the property.

Muschiett is certainly a more encouraging pick for director than Wiseman and for those of you who are not fans of Kurtzman/Orci, they aren’t scripting the film, those duties are Jon Spaihts’ (PROMETHEUS, THE DARKEST HOUR).

I still can’t muster up too much interest in this project but what do you guys think? Is this a good hire? Did you enjoy MAMA?
