There's Another Sherlock Holmes Project On The Way?? And It Sounds Kind Of (Mag)neato!!

Ian McKellen

Despite the presence of the Robert Downey Jr./Guy Ritchie SHERLOCK HOMES feature films, despite the presence of the quirky-but-magnificent SHERLOCK on BBC One, and despite the presence of ELEMENTARY, CBS’s somewhat crass derivation of BBC One’s SHERLOCK, plans are apparently afoot for another take on the character.  This one would find the master sleuth in his later years...but not yet done.

THIS piece over at ScreenDaily indicates that Bill Condon (GODS AND MONSTERS, the upcoming and interesting looking FIFTH ESTATE with Cumberbatch) will helm A SLIGHT TRICK OF THE MIND, based on a novel by Mitch Cullin and starring McKellen as (presumably) Holmes.

Set in 1947, the film follows a long-retired Sherlock Holmes, who lives in a sleepy Sussex village with his housekeeper and her amateur-sleuthing son.

But rather than enjoying a peaceful retirement, the famous Baker Street detective is haunted by an unsolved case from 50 years ago. He remembers only fragments: a confrontation with an angry husband, a secret bond with his beautiful but unstable wife.

...says SD, which also says Jeffrey Hatcher (THE DUTCHESS, STRANGE BEAUTY) is adapting Cullin’s work.  It should be noted that McKellen and Condon worked together before on GODS AND MONSTERS.

While it’s hard not to wonder if this is, simply, too much Holmes (what did Captain Kirk say?  “Too much of anything is never a good thing.”), this does sound fun and it’s hard not to look forward to McKellen playing the part.  Meanwhile, ELEMENTARY returns September 26, SHERLOCK Season/Series 3 has recently wrapped and is on its way soon, and who the hell knows what happened to the third DowneyHolmes movie we were supposed to get. Been a while since we’ve heard about that one...
